I just have a hard time believing that he'll leave Mercer to come here. For one, he's likely 1-2 seasons away from receiving some much better offers. I would imagine that any coach who is almost 60, and has an opportunity to coach at a high level, wouldn't do anything to jeopardize that opportunity. Even though he would be an immediate improvement from Layer, we just do not have the roster to win a bunch of games next year. He's going to have to settle for at least one, if not two, 15 win seasons before we're even competitive. Mercer on the other hand could be 1-2 seasons away from another 20 win season and a tournament birth.
I don't have any inside information. I don't know Hoffman or anything. So, I'm not going to be shocked if it does happen. I'll just be a little surprised that an older coach with potential would be willing to make a lateral move. The only way that makes sense is if JB feels very secure about our chances to move into a bigger conference and can sell that future as a step up from Mercer.
Its not a lateral move when it comes to facilities, and $$. trust me when I say this. It is INCREDIBLE to see what Hoffman has done at Mercer with the resources he has.
I'm sure it is but consider this: If he takes the Liberty job, where is he in two years? Liberty. If he stays at Mercer, where could he be in two years? MVC, A-10, C-USA, American...etc. I love Liberty but where has that money and facilities gotten us in the past several years?
If you have the inside source, I'll trust you. I just don't understand how anyone who has that much potential, but not many years left, would be gung-ho about a school with little basketball history in the Big South.
