Based on what? He has never been a HC anywhere. His career to this point has been spent making recommendations. Do you really want to put the job of resurrecting our program in the hands of someone who has never had to actually make a meaningful decision as a coach in his life? Not me. I think at least one successful stint as a HC at some level is a bare minimum requirement, and based on what he has said I believe JB feels the same.

How much experience did Meyer have in 83 or whenever he arrived, How bout the baseball coach Toman? Brad Stevens? Bob McKillop at Davidson? Kevin Keatts UNCW? Kelsey at Winthrop? Cherry at HP? Radebaugh had 1 year of D2 experience.
Layer had a bunch of experience and failed miserably!!!
Maybe Liberty needs an AD with "ONIONS" instead of deep pockets.
When Meyer came to LU we were playing in the NCCAA. Our HC job was an "entry level" position. As a D1 program, it no longer is. Despite his recruiting prowess, Jim Toman's lack of HC experience was very evident in his first few years at LU and still rears it's head from time to time. Bob McKillop was a highly successful HS Head Coach in New York for 15 years before taking the Davidson Job. Kevin Keatts had a record of 262-17 in 2 stints as HC at Hargrave before hooking up with the Pitinos.
Are you actually using Kelsey, Cherry and Radabaugh as examples of great hires? lol
It is true that Brad Stevens had no HC experience when Butler promoted him to head their program. Can we acknowledge that he is exceptional? Butler knew they had something special and made the right move.
I'm not saying there aren't assistants out there who could do a good job for us, but as important as this hire is, I can understand why JB would want someone who has proven he can win as the guy making the calls.
