Coming home from a church event last evening, I was rather anxious to get home and check the score. In the car my wife could see my determination to get home quickly and said what any reasonable LU Alumni would say right now based on the current state of our MBB team, "why do you even bother checking, you know what the outcome will be."
Then it hit me! I am not actually anxious to get home and see if we won. I've been anxious to get home and see how bad we lost.
Honestly, why do I even bother... The last few years have been absolute misery, set aside one instance of excitement. I recognize sports teams transition up and down, with various successes as a program. However, this program has simply remained at awful. One championship season, giving us a short appearance in the tourney does not a program or coach make. Any program can have its 15 minutes of fame at various levels. What I desire as an Alumni is a quality, successful program from season to season. I am not expecting to win the BSC every year, nor have multiple tourney appearances. I even know there will be real bad seasons we must experience from time to time.
I am expecting to see a team that has life, excitement, makes me carve out time in my busy life to watch. Is it too much to think that after multiple years of the same old story things will change. How many years must we hear that same excuses of, its recruiting, its fan base, its money, its schedule, its injury's, its JUCO transfers, its, its, its... I am pretty sure at this point, everyone can say the same thing now, its coaching. Otherwise, this rollercoaster would have starting going up the next hill by now, instead of this continuous plunge downward. All you need to watch is the quality of product being put the court, nothing else matters. The product is a direct result of coaching decisions. Plays called, starting roster, rotation of players, use of time, the list goes on.
When even your basic of Alumni, those with little interest in a sports program, make profound and truthful statements at the state of affairs right now of our MBB program, it helps you understand the reason for hearing the crickets during MBB games due to the lack of fan excitement and frankly anyone caring.
Ok, back to work now!
