Here is another quandary: we have 0 chance of making the Tournament as is. We shake up the Staff now we have more of a shot...albeit a long one. History has shown Interim Coaches can take teams to the Tourney...and make noise. So what's the difference between now or at the end of the Season? If you wait till the end of the contract he has 1 more year so we can make super extra certain this isn't going to work out. So in my mind, there are only 2 viable options

A lot of fairweather fans on here. You gotta figure, the coastal kicker puts a little more elevation on that chip shot and we'd calling for Gill to get fired as well.
Money is one of the the last things LU has to be concerned about.

I know, but it doesn't give a good feeling knowing that we wasted money buying out his contract, when it could have been used for a better use, regardless of how much money the school has. It would give me seconds thoughts about giving money to the athletic program. Let the season play out before we start calling for jobs. Yes, Presby was a bad loss. Coastal is the best team in the league. It's the same team that had UVA against the ropes in the tournament last year. I'm not sure what else was expected from Saturday's result

Letting Layer finish this season allows him to fully own his mistakes without unnecessarily burning bridges with him and the assistants. It also clearly shows onlookers/potential candidates that we are not acting in a knee-jerk fashion. Firing a coach in the offseason is one thing; firing a coach midseason is another. It is important that the administration handles the situation professionally.

Letting Layer finish out the contract would be a very bad decision. As much as I would like us to make the tournament this season, the future of the program is taking priority at this point. The program is at rock bottom. I'm pretty sure that we are "super extra certain" that Layer isn't working out.

Getting hot won't happen the way things currently are. Making a change gives us a shot and mid season coaching changes will in NO WAY effect what a new coach thinks of our program. If that is really your concern than having DL finish his contract signals to every potential coach they will have every opportunity, and then some, to produce.

I am normally not for a mid season chance but I think this may be one of those rare cases. The players seem to just be going through the motions at this point. Maybe hearing it from someone else would help. Who knows though...

To be clear, PH, you're saying the only two reasonable options are: 1) NOW/mid season, or 2) end of contract. Correct?

I'm asking for clarification, because that's what I think you're saying. But, I mm not sure the test of the board picked up on that. Interesting deduction, if it's what you meant.

ballcoach15 wrote:We have played 13 D1 games. We have scored 60 points only 4 times. That is bad.
There are only two teams in the country with a worse adjusted offensive efficiency than Liberty - Florida A&M and Grambling State - and neither one of those teams has a single win against a D1 team. So basically the only reason why LU has a worse offense is because of the two worst teams in college basketball exist.

I'd be ok with that...the more D-I wins the better.

Anyway, let him finish the season and then just suggest he "resign."

I think the reason that they arent on the schedule instead of the DII, NAIA, and D3's is because we don't know that they would turn out to be those wins that sound so easy.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe if DL resigned we would not have to honor the last year of his contract. I doubt if he would want tp give that up. Maybe he would go for it if he already had a cushy assistants job lined up in Blacksburg.

You might not like Purple, but you could at least give some sort of acknowledgement to his existence.

That's a good point on the resigning vs. fired thing. Sometimes schools give the option to resign or be fired. I guess the theory is that some people would rather have the story be they resigned instead of fired. I'd rather be fired if it means my contract has to be bought out though because everyone knows in situations like this that the resigning coach was given the "resign or fired" option.

I won't put this in the game thread but so I will address it here
I disagree that former players aren't owed anything. I think they should be owed respect and shown respect. They put 4 years, for the most part, of blood sweat and tears to help build or sustain their respective programs. The absolute LEAST they deserve is respect and acknowledgement of that. They most certainly are not deserving of input into every player and personnel decision, but communicating with them, reaching out to them and making them part of a family are owed to them.

While i will ignore our vertically challenged friend's comment...

My point was that while I do think that the current players and coaches need to have a healthy respect and understanding of the history of the program and that having that connection is a good thing, it needs to be balanced. You hit on that by saying they don't need to be part of the final decision as far as player and personnel matters (which is what I was getting at with the debt and reparations thing), but they do at least need to be reached out to (hench the thing with having athletic alumni liaisons)
