History has shown Interim Coaches can take teams to the Tourney...and make noise. So what's the difference between now or at the end of the Season? If you wait till the end of the contract he has 1 more year so we can make super extra certain this isn't going to work out. So in my mind, there are only 2 viable options
Letting Layer finish this season allows him to fully own his mistakes without unnecessarily burning bridges with him and the assistants. It also clearly shows onlookers/potential candidates that we are not acting in a knee-jerk fashion. Firing a coach in the offseason is one thing; firing a coach midseason is another. It is important that the administration handles the situation professionally.
Letting Layer finish out the contract would be a very bad decision. As much as I would like us to make the tournament this season, the future of the program is taking priority at this point. The program is at rock bottom. I'm pretty sure that we are "super extra certain" that Layer isn't working out.
