As I see it, Texas has three options: stay in the Big XII, go to the ACC (either fully or an agreement like ND), or go independent. Too many obstacles with the Big Ten, SEC, and Pac-12. Independence is very unlikely, but is still an option for a school like Texas.
I think that Texas stays in the Big XII and the conference is eventually are forced to add two for a championship game. The other P5 conferences are not going to bail out the Big XII. The other schools/conferences might agree to change the current rules mandating two six team divisions for a conference championship game, but I doubt that they will remove the 12 team minimum. They have an advantage over the Big XII in the playoff format (whether 4 or 8 teams) and they aren't going to give it up easily, especially after everyone starts seeing the financial benefits from this year's playoff.
