Well if you are looking between a Chromecast and a Roku 3 or Roku Streaming Stick, the choice would be obvious here now if you have a Windows 8 or Android phone with at least the 4.4.2 version of Android on it.

I'll still wait to see what comes of Android TV, mostly because of gaming. Not that I really play many Android games but having games on my TV could open the door more for me. But if Android TV isn't what I am hoping it will be and at a reasonable price, I'll finally upgrade my original model Roku to a Roku 3.

Fire TV showed the first look at gaming through a set-top box with Android apps. It is actually a better experience than I expected.

Although Fire is based on android, not quite the same though. I want to see how Google themselves do it first. My guess is that it will probably be better than Amazon's implementations for no other reason than they'll see what doesn't work as well on Fire TV and look to fix it or improve it. Beating out a Roku 3 is going to be tough if Android TV doesn't get Amazon Prime though.

Amazon just came HARD at Roku and Google. They have introduced the Amazon Fire Stick, their equivalent of the Roku Streaming Stick and the Chromecast. It comes with a remote, it ONLY COSTS $19 IF YOU ARE A PRIME MEMBER. It's $39 for non-prime members. You can voice search baked into the remote if you pay another $30, which seems like an absurd amount of money to spend for that.

$69 for Fire TV today as a Cybwer Monday special. You can have it delivered by Thursday for free with Prime.

Mrs. Sly just bought me one for Christmas after a few subtle hints. But it will need a test drive on Saturday before it gets wrapped and placed under the tree.

FWIW - I picked up the "Fire Stick" for $19... there are some things I love: the integrated search, the instant play of prime videos, the quality of video play. What I don't like:

1. I have had to unplug it several times because it freezes.
2. There is a power cord attached (no hint of that in advertisement)
3. The device is hard to plug into my two TVs.
4. The power cord is difficult to connect to the stick.

I had convinced myself to grab one next time it's on sale, but I'm glad you mentioned the power cord. That just seems cumbersome.

I have a Roku3 for Watch ESPN and HBOGO and have been thrilled with it. I very rarely have any issues and it streams flawlessly.

I sometimes have problems with buffering in Netflix, but that's mostly because of my subpar internet connection. It works fine back in Lynchburg when I bring it over the Holidays.

Oh, and Netflix will stream decently on a 4G connection if you have one of those Verizon Hot Spot things or something of similar caliber. Not going to get HD quality most of the time, but if you're several feet away from the TV it's not too shabby.

My son rarely touches his Xbox 360 now since the Fire TV arrived. He loves using his phone and his Moga Pro as controllers on the games. It has made some of the games he's played on his phone have a new feel blown up on a big screen.

At our place, our primary TV is across the house from our ISP gateway. So our Chromecast gets very laggy. But our Fire TV has been outstanding in delivering strong HD signals without fail and less buffering time. And the cracks about the keyboard scrolling on Fire TV is a non-factor since the voice search is outstanding and ridiculously fast.

I can tell you that Fire TV Stick sales have exceeded expectations thus far in the holiday shopping season. It'd make a great gift for technophile in your life who loves streaming the Watch ESPN app.

I pretty much wasted my money on it. I rarely ever use it, I bought into the hype and the potential which is still largely untapped in my opinion. Roku 3 is so much better for my purposes.

I still use the Chromecast on a secondary TV for ESPN purposes. But it is so buggy that it bails out on most commercial breaks. It is better than nothing but has yet to be fully unlocked to its potential. I love my Fire TV much more than my Dad's Roku 3. But that is just my opinion.
