Why only a one-deep on the line? Wagner said his players don’t back up certain positions, but work at all five line spots so they can be used when called upon in any situation. The Flames have traveled with eight offensive linemen in recent years. Wagner wants to bring 10 on the road this year.

is this the new way of looking at it? a unit as the whole, not the individual positions? I know little about it but always thought tackles/guards had different skill sets

seems like depth on the line has always been our issue (maybe everyone in FCS) which is why you see us play tough until late in the games when guys tire.

Nearly all of the backups play multiple line positions. Grant Jones played all three last year. Callison can play inside and out. Hartman seems to have the ability to play both as well. I think Wagner's point is that he doesn't want to shoehorn one guy into being the backup right tackle. Maybe that guy is your ninth best lineman, and when you lose Mitch Hanson, you want to be able to play your sixth best guy there.

yeah I admit its an interesting concept. was just wondering if thats the "new industry standard"

how cool would it be to have the athletes to be able to apply that concept to offensive skill guys

For skill positions, that would be an interesting concept. I think in some ways that is where the "H-Back" was born from. Having someone who can line up in the backfield as a FB or TB, and can also line up as a TE as well. Someone like Jimmy Graham from the Saints is another interesting case, or even Tony Gonzalez before him. Guys that are listed as TE but because of their outstanding athleticism can be a 6th WR in the rotation and offer a lot of versatility in the passing game. Im not sure that having a QB who also plays receiver would be good for continuity, unless you run say a "Wildcat" type offense that would allow for a QB to line up at WR.

The more "skill position" players on the field the better. tight ends who can do more than block and catch occasional pass are very valuable. I love TEs who can double as WR.

Not surprising to me after looking at his HS video, but it looks like Zac Parker is going to make an impact. He is apparently now our #1 option at both PR and KR as well as Henderson's backup in the slot. I think this kid is going to be a playmaker for us. He and Fritts are both upgrades from what we had off the bench at WR last year. I don't see Glover as a starter for long, and if Shells continues having issues with drops, Fritts could move up.

Parker impressed me on his film as well. having a potential gamebreaker back on punt and kick returns will really help us in the field position game (which is a surprisingly underrated aspect of a lot of games...especially the close ones)

What is even more impressive about Parker is that he has actually been out of football for a year. He was not allowed to practice or work out with the team last year or receive any coaching while getting his academics in order. Anything he did was on his own.
