I thought that this was an LU fan forum. Last time I checked, Cheerleading at LU was run under the athletic department. Don't marginalize what these student-athletes do as "a waste". There are those of us who have a vested interest in how the cheerleading program is doing and I appreciate the administrators and moderators providing us with a place for that.

This is a forum for all things LU. Welcome Cheerleaders. We appreciate what you do. I will disagree that cheerleading is a sport, unless you are referring to the competitions in which you compete. The mere definition of sport includes engaging in some kind of competition. With that being said, we appreciate the good job you do at all sporting events pumping up the crowd! BTW - rip on the male cheerleaders all you want, but they have some serious guns. I can't put my wife in a preacher sit without her falling on my head!

(jk--relax) Although I have seen more stop, drop, and roll with cheerleaders than kids doing fire drills.

I never said they aren't athletic--but they are NOT student-athletes. When the NCAA recognizes the activity as a sport, then I'll change my tune.

"In cheerleading, we're seeing trends of really high loss ratios to the catastrophic program," said Juanita Sheely, NCAA travel and insurance coordinator. "With our current provider, Mutual of Omaha, there have been six total cheerleader injuries, with four what we consider truly catastrophic injuries. Those four represent 22 percent of our overall claims costs, second only to football injuries. This percentage is very high when you consider what a small portion of all covered student-athletes cheerleaders represent.

Because of the LU cheerleading team (mascots are part of the team) I've:

1. Mascot for the Lynchburg Hillcats (2 yrs) and was the first Hillcat mascot to attend the Carolina All-Star Game. During that time I became friends with a handful of guys who made it to the MLB. Two of them were my roommates with 2 other LU cheerleaders

2. Recruited by the Atlanta Braves and mascoted for almost 4 seasons including the 2000 All-Star Game in Atlanta.

3. Mascoted for the Harlem Globetrotters for 3 years. Entertained in 25+ states and 16 countries around the world. My childhood dream of visiting Iceland was finally realized in 2003.

4. Official Mascot of the Chicago Bears, Staley Da Bear, created a health program for elementary kids and have visited over 20,000 kids in the last 6 months teaching them the benefits of living a healthy life.

In the 12 years that I have mascoted, I have entertained over 10 Million people from Hawaii to Estonia (former USSR).

None of this would have been possible if it wasn't for my 4 years I spent on the Liberty Cheerleading Team. My five closest friends to this day are former members of the LU Cheer team and all have had a major impact on not only my life, but countless others with their full-time ministry.

I used to hate cheerleading teams too. Then I walked a mile in their shoes and now have the utmost respect for them. My life is better because of our team.

I think everyone on here would have to admit the athletic nature of the sport. And you'd have a tough time finding anyone to say they don't enjoy their role in the game atmosphere.

Cheerleading competitions and band competitions have been on ESPN (They showed DCIs this year for band, and some kind of college cheerleading/dance team competition as well).

I'm gonna restart the marching band thread!

Curling and golf (especially Natalie Gulbis) have better calendars, though.
