It was Marshall. I didn't think it was a bad shot at the time, he was open. But he hesitated and made it into a very tough shot.
Actually it was a bad shot for a couple of reasons: There was more time on the clock to run a good set and get an open three and secondly because he tried to draw the foul which just wasn't there because Tim Marshall did a good job of not landing on him when he pump faked. Once VMI's Marshall didn't make a lot of contact, Davon Marshall should have pulled out of it and found someone else in my opinion. He is the guy you want taking that last shot but I just thought he could have been more patient and eventually gotten an open look.

Sanders did the right thing, he had his man beat was going to make the lay up, Covington just made a great play, probably only dude in the league that could have blocked that lay up.... The other lay up Sanders just missed was wide open.

Most of you guys hate on Sanders, but that guy puts pressure on the other team because he attacks so much. Not sure why LU attempted only 8 3's.... With Tomaz & Marshall they should shoot at least 6 per game. Marshall minutes were down, Tomaz seemed out of it.

Liberty is way better when they play with the lead, they are not a good come from behind team.

I agree with you. What I was trying to say was when he initially pumped, he was open. If he would have just pulled straight up instead of using the pump fake, I don't think it would have been a bad shot. Instead, he hesitated which gave the defense that split second to get closer to him. It also forced him to be off balance.

If he would have pulled straight up, while still in rhythm, it would have likely been the cleanest look we would have gotten.

I concur. I think that has been an issue with Davon with his misses. Not shooting in rythm and shot faking a lot. He has an unbelievable shot fake though. He really sells it. But it sometimes takes away from the shooting rythm.

Somewhere Bob Knight would be happy with Davon's shot fake, shot fake, shot fake!!

When you shoot it as good as he does just pull the trigger!

I think I texted you something about those last two possessions

I was thinking there was more than 10 seconds. Even still if you are going to shot fake from 3 you'd best drive instead of trying to draw the foul. It doesn't really work out. He drives and puts it in there would still be ~8 seconds left after the foul. More than enough time to get a shot off

I still think that it would have been better to set up a play in the frontcourt off a timeout. Put the 4 shooters I mentioned and Retic on the floor and run a set that gives him the option of going to the basket and cutting it to one, or collapsing the defense and opening up a great look in rhythm as manson mentioned

It looked to me like he thought he was going to draw a foul. He hesitated to get the man in the air but it was a good defensive play in avoiding contact and the result was a bad shot.

He and Layer both said he was trying to draw a foul, playing off VMI's tendency to overplay shooters. Credit the Keydets for not overplaying on that particular play.

I hate that strategy. Just play ball and let it be. I personally know of officials who would never blow a foul on a shooter jumping into a defender. The key phrase, or so I'm told is Who initiated the contact?

That makes much more sense. Still can't believe that's our go to play in that situation to try and tie it. nothing better than to hope the other team fouls you from way downtown? Ends of games have been excruciating to watch.

Still much better than what i initially feared.

Trying to draw a foul is not a good play. The odds are better on making a shot than drawing a foul.

I thought every team has plays drawn up for last second shots to win games, and practice them regularly to where come game time, players know them and execute them.

One would wonder...maybe next time I meet with my coaching mentor I will talk to him about that situation and see what he would do

I often think you post nonsense but you are dead spot on in this. We saw how trying to draw a foul worked out for us in the Tournament. You would think we would have learned. Especially a Senior

I agree...Im sure PH could wax quite a bit on how many times they worked on late game situations with the Lady Pioneers

Looking at the play chart, we had Burrus, Sanders, Smith, Gielo and Marshall on the floor in that situation. I would have subbed Burrus and Smith for Retic and Layer, and with the shot clock off at that point, we could have worked with the scenario I posted and gotten an excellent look

ahh thanks for that Lang I forgot that detail. Roberts then...point being get 4 shooters on the floor along with Retic to facilitate and give him plenty of options to ensure a good look for a game tying 3
