Good Gameday Morning guys. #BeatLiberty :)

I was reading the breakdown of the game by Ryan Young - the guy who covers CCU - and he mentioned something that surprised me. Hoping you guys can shed some light on it. He mentioned that you guys rank 2nd to last in pass defense in the conference. How is this possible? You guys have said that your secondary is great, so has our coach and Ryan Young. Are teams dinking and dunking down the field on you guys? Is your secondary poor tacklers? Just doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Thanks!

I'd guess that is due to the gameplan against ODU. Give up the short pass game to keep them from getting deep balls, then stuff them in the redzone. We gave up 450 pass yards to ODU. Take that game out, and I'd imagine we are giving up less than 200 pass yards per game.

Thanks FL. F-ing Heinicke and ODU ;) They skew everyone's numbers it seems. I looked at some numbers to get a comparison and I was surprised to see: Your D allows 11.4 per catch and 7.0 per attempt which is higher than I expected. For comparison, our D is allowing 6.2 per attempt and 11.9 per catch which is lower than I anticipated. Maybe it's just me though.

**edit** wow, I can't write d-a-m-n on here? Yikes!

Doyle,

Yeah, against ODU, they gave up the underneath route every time and tried to keep the receivers in front of them to prevent big plays. Heinicke generally checked down to his third or fourth option, usually a running back or a slot receiver wide open over the middle. Kent State moved the ball well through the air on short routes as well. The late touchdown at ODU was a coverage breakdown where the corner thought he had safety help and got none, so Roberts got behind Fogg. Liberty tends not to press much with its corners either. They give up a lot of 6 or 7 yard plays if it means they won't give up the big shot. The tackling was suspect at Kent State but was much better in the other two games that mattered.

Also, here's my gameday post:

For the most part. They seem to like to give a cushion. I assume because it gives a DB more time to try to break on a ball for an interception or margin for error on a quick move from a receiver. Probably something I should ask the DBs coach about, actually.

We put both of our corners on an island more than many other schools in order to get more help up front. I have assumed that was the explanation for the cushion from Walt & Kevin. Both have turned into excellent tacklers this season.

I think our tackling as a whole has been better the last 2 years but more so this year.
