Over all, very excited about our team.

Whos Hot?
Woodrum- Very Poised, no TurnOvers, Accurate for the most part.
Richardson- The lights came on, and he showed is talent. #1 RB for sure. (des can pass block)
Young WRs ( Big, fast, good hands)
Aarron Dial - His one arm take down was amazing, and hes as sure a tackler as weve seen

Whos Not
Offensive Guards - Malcom got better as the game went on, but they pushed us up the middle
Corners Fogg, and Aiken. Missed tackles by these guys caused for two huge plays. I expect more.
O Coordinator - nothing terrible, but Woodrum doesnt need to be babied, open up the playbook a bit

I really think that Peterson should've had those two drops. He'll get better.

I believe he played the next to last drive. He had shown throughout the game that he would be totally ineffective, and Richardson had shown the ability to get up field and get positive yardage. There was no reason to keep wasting downs on someone who wasn't getting it done at that point in the game.
Valid but what we don't know is what Dez was showing in practice. He may have shown more then he did last night. So for the first game you would think the coaches were hoping he would do in a game what he did in practice. If they had him in the final possession or if that trend continues into week 6 then I'd be concerned. It does appear the staff is dedicated to a 2 RB system which should be fine when AA comes back.
As for the O Line they are in the process of switching schemes from years past so there will be some growing pains but I thought they looked ok in the 2nd half. The trenches will always be tough at this level. It's just difficult to recruit them so I don't think we are the only FCS school with this issue

my question; do you think ODU is a bigger challenge than Kent?

I actually do.
I think so as well.
Uh, yeah. ODU's offense is pretty unbelievable. If their defense is improved from last year, they are going to give ECU a run for their money tomorrow.
We need the defense to really gel by Oct 5 in order to stay in that one.

looks like 21-17 ecu at the half

Halftime stats: Taylor Heinicke 15 of 20 for 192 yards passing and 2 TDs. ECU's Shane Carden 29 of 35 for 266 yards and 3 TDs.

Sheesh seems they still have no defense at all.

O-line with a rough start. Very frustrating watching the 1st quarter on Thursday. need to improve in the O-line if we want to win some games this year. ODU will be the toughest game on our schedule. Now hoping for a 11-1 season :)

I truly did not know what to expect from our guys this game. Short of an outright win I'd have to say this was probably more than I instinctively may have verbalized (had I chosen to).

I do think Richardson and Allen (if he is healthy and up to speed) will make a strong tandem in the backfield. Both are very different runners and they will help us keep Ds off balance.

I also think that if we add a few more tosses to the "Y" (Apon and Co) that may keep the LBs honest and hopefully help get our young OL into the LBs on the running plays. That in turn may give our RBs and little more wiggle room to make something happen. As soon as the LBs take their eyes off the Y and cheat up a little we dump one again for a nice 7 yard gain...then enter Mr Peterson and 'bam we start rollin' (pun intended - btw Christion Jones is a beast!)

Go Flames!!!

I know it sounds like a real simplistic, Captain Obvious kind of point, but if we can get the running game going that will open up more opportunities for Woodrum to spread the ball around to the receivers (Peterson, Shells, Apon et al). I wouldnt be surprised to see Richardson get the start this week to be frank

Richardson should get the start this week if based off of performance, Dez did a real good job of pass pro, but so so at running the rock, it looked as CR was a little more decisive with getting his shoulders north and south whereas DR could barely get back to the LOS most times. Stats are not lying at this point.

On the otherhand...coach 'potatoing' is so easy...

Just read that LU has not been very good at scoring a TD in the first quarter ( 4 times in 12 games) under Coach Gill. As I reflect on the first 4 games (non-conf) last year we fought our way back and had a chance to tie or win against NSU and Lehigh only to fall short. I'm a huge fan of using the TE to soften up the running and deep games. It would be nice to develop a 1st Q quick-six attitude around here as well...winning is also part attitude.

A guy can have his cake and eat it too on a message board right? All I want is everything.

Go Flames!!!

I think Gill tried that. The first play was going to be a pass and Woodrum was sacked I do believe for a 6 yard loss according to the play by play on ESPN box score. So he did have that quick strike mentality but woodrum didn't have enough time, also there was a holding penalty the same play that was declined..

Good to know - thanks. That makes me feel even better about our prospects this season. I was driving and listening to the game while I could. We need more than conference championships now. It's time for going deep into the playoffs!
