Per FlamesNation, this 6´6 PG, who has offers from several Big East and ACC schools and is rated as high as 4 stars by one service visited LU recently and said he wants to come.

One little problem. We don´t have a scholarship available. I´m not sure why a player this highly recruited hasn´t signed this late in the game. Normally it would indicate issues with qualifying. With a couple of the borderline players we have on our roster I would hate to see us lose out on the most highly rated recruit we have had in a long time, but no matter how much he likes Liberty, with the offers he has I can´t imagine he would come and pay his own way for a year as suggested.

Layer actually gave Roberts and his son a scholarship? wasn't his son on the LCA scholarship?

6'6 long frame skilled body? something what this team needs. if he wants to come you offer him.

There was a ruling about the LCA Scholarship. IIRC, it basically says that if an LCA kid plays at LU under that provision, it counts as an Athletic scholarship. Otherwise, LCA could turn into a prep school for athletes, which would be great....for LU!
However IMO, this is a mountain out of ample hill. If this guys interested, I'm sure we will offer if we haven't already.

Pretty sure Ethan Layer is not on an LCA scholarship. He gets tuition as the child of an LU employee, and it doesn´t count against our scholarship total. His brother Tim did the same, as did Dominique Jones when his father was an assistant under............................ never mind.

I understand where Purple is coming from in saying that if we really want the kid they can almost always work something out, but at this late date, if we have already ¨reupped¨ everyone coming back, plus Kemrite and Retic coming in, we may be at the limit of 13. The scholarship that Jarred Jourdan had appears to be the big question. Seems they may have given it to Roberts, but they don´t generally announce those things.

Put it this way. If this kid wants to sign and is a qualifiler and we dont make a spot for him then the entire staff should be relieved of duties ha. I could think of two players easily that are not worthy of schollies

I think employee scholarships still count. I may be mistaken but remember hearing about it during the NCAA tournament when there were an inordinate amount of coaches kids on the floor. I think it was a Kansas game.
Not to put too fine a point on it, worst case scenario, Layer is making enough money to pay for his sons tuition out of pocket (assuming his kid is on scholarship). If not, then it pays to remember this is a business and a marginal kid will get his scholarship yanked for this kid. I'm sure they will do what they can to ease any burden but at the end of the day talent talks and no one is worried about a scholarship limit.

I can certainly think of 2 players who will play very Little this year. As far as being ¨worthy¨of a scholarship is concerned, that sometimes goes beyond what a kid does in games. Nobody uses a 13 man rotation on any kind of a regular basis, so a kid with a great attitude who busts his butt in practice and is a stud in the classroom can be ¨worthy¨sitting on the end of the bench during games.

As far as making a spot is concerned, scholarships are a series of one year contracts which are renewed by mutual consent. The program can ¨make a spot¨ by choosing not to renew, but once they have and the papers are signed, I´m pretty sure they are locked in for another year. I don´t know the exact time frame for doing this.

he's available this late because he's a late bloomer but it would show how much of a joke the staff is if they don't make room for him, if he truly wants to come here.

giving two walk-ons scholarships? come on. plus Wes and Sommy isn't even going to play. If they do not a lot.

Here is a link to the current roster. It does not include incoming recruits Kemrite and Retic.

http://www.liberty.edu/flames/?PID=10871&TeamID=6

Layer and Roberts were walkons last year. The other 10 were all on scholarship. If that remained the case, we would still have a schollie to offer Boswell. If FN´s info is correct, we don´t, which could pretty much only mean they gave a schollie to Roberts. Hard to argue he didn´t deserve it based on his production vs a couple of returning scholarship players.

It says a lot about the high level of integrity that Dale has if this guy wants to come and we dont find a scholarship for him (aside from the ideas mentioned about paying or EL, etc.). He is showing that these guys have been committed to him/Liberty and he is showing his commitment to them by not releasing one to make one up. From a competitive standpoint, we (as fans) obviously would want him, but it is respectable to be committed to the roster we have and guys that have been committed to Liberty that might not be at the same talent level. Kudos to Dale if he isn't trying to push someone away for a highly sought after recruit.

This of course is speculation if he was interested in Liberty, and yes I realize that every other team in the country would probably do whatever necessary to free up a spot for a kid that would be one of the highest signees in their school's history.

I also see why someone would have an opposing viewpoint on this and it would also be a warranted point of view. :: Goes back into hole waiting another 2 years to post again ::

A lot of time when a highly recruited player doesn't sign until late, it usually is either they are potentially looking for a place with the most playing time, or they have some serious academic issues that sort of concerns both parties on both ends.

He bloomed early enough for multiple Big East and ACC schools to offer him. I really doubt all of those offers have come in the past few weeks, with the signing period over and most schools having already filled their scholarship allottment. The issue is, why hasn´t he signed? I don´t know, but the most common reason good players aren´t signed this late in the game is that they have issues with eligibility.

We have not given 2 schollies to walkons. Ethan Layer is definately not on an athletic scholarship. He is either on an employee child tuition waiver (if NCAA rules permit it) or he is paying his own way. It appears Casey Roberts has been given a scholarship, and you can make a very good argument that he deserves it based on his performance last year.

I am pretty much positive that Ethan is not on an athletic scholarship. The numbers don´t add up, and I know that when he played year before last, PxP always referred to him as a walkon. I can only surmise that Roberts is, because otherwise there would be no issue with a schollie being available for Boswell.

It´s elementary my dear Watson.

If you don´t count Layer or Roberts, there are 10 scholarship players on the current roster. Add the schollies of the departed Speaks, Taylor and Jourdan, to get the a full allottment of 13 we started last year with. We have signed 2, so unless one was given to either Layer or Roberts, we would have one available, and apparently we don´t. Of those 2, I am certain it would be Roberts. DL is too Smart and too classy to spend a precious scholarship on his son, when he is a 5 to 10 minute a game role player at best.

Roberts was a walkon last year. It wouldn't shock me if he got a scholarship...Kyle Ohman ended up with one after starting as a walkon
It´s actually quite likely that Casey has been on scholarship since the beginning of the 2nd semester after Jourdan left.
Also true. I'm saying that it isn't some earth shattering precedent if he did end up with one since it happened in fairly recent history
