I appreciate the effort, but I think the name 'Red Tails' stink! I posted on the ESPN website that I think the name 'Washington Warriors' would be a good name if they have to change it. This one guy posted a link full of designs pertaining to the 'Washington Warriors' concept. I think it's a wonderful design and it keeps the Native-American theme intact.

Here's the link to the designs...

Troof. This is just another attempt to put pressure on Snyder and the NFL.

The name will change in the next 10-15 years once a successful lawsuit comes along. Public opinion has already changed drastically on the issue in the DC area. There's still a majority in favor of keeping the name, but it's close now and that wasn't the case 10 years ago.

Snyder has had people working on names and logo designs for years to try and find the best way to transition while keeping things close to the current look and not changing the color scheme.

If they ever change the name then I am never spending another dime on tickets or merchandise ever again.

Of course, what's lost in all of this is that it seems DC wants this to be a team about black history (because apparently that's okay since they're black). Now before I get get labeled a racist... isn't that racist?

BuryYourDuke wrote:Umm, I'm not sure where you got that info on Snyder. Because the info I've had for years was him saying something to the effect of "I will spend every dime I have, but I'm never changing the name."
I worked for the head of his security detail for 6 years. I've actually heard Snyder say, privately, that he's got contingency plans being worked on for whenever public sentiment or a lawsuit leads him to have to change the name. He's toned down the rhetoric about the name publicly as the polls about the name have changed over the years. It's simply smart PR on his part.

Yeah but the black DC council would like a team named after their own race. It's be like me saying they should be called the Rednecks.

The name I've heard tossed around is Washington Americans with an image of a Native American still being used, just with it being vetted so that it's considered non offensive. No real scheme or color changes and a slight rewrite to the fight song. Snyder won't allow any name change to occur without being allowed to use the Redskins name/imagery during any kind of throwback week. There's also been some hinting towards referencing the great run under Gibbs and somehow integrating Hogs into the official nickname. Whatever happens, if the change occurs under Snyder he's not going to let things get very far from the team's history.

There's less than zero chance that something like Red Tails occurs.

That would definitely work. Like I said, Snyder won't allow things to get far from the history/brand that the team has established.

are there people who arn't redskin fans because of this? if they change, will it bring them back to the fold? are there people who don't go to games because of this? if they change, will they start going to games?

the answer is probably no. i foresee if it does change it will be forcibly changed or it will happen with new ownership down the line.

Because that's the biggest jerk/FU move of all. People have the right to be offended when an ethnic/racial slur is used. You don't have to be offended, but you don't have the right to tell them they can't be. Look up the term "redskin" in almost any dictionary and you'll see that it's typically used in a derogatory way.

Okay, and crackers was at one time offensive, and today it's not. Words change. Definitions change. It's a fact of life.

Perhaps Redskin was once a racial slur, a long time ago. But language is an art, and as such, it changes. If not, we'd still be using thou and thee, and shew would be an acceptable alternative for shown.

People choose to be offended, mainly because it makes themselves feel important. I believe they should simply find something else to do, accomplish something productive in life, rather than running around being constantly offended.

I'm pretty sure the term cracker is still considered somewhat offensive except in Florida where it has a different meaning. Also, I don't know of any major sports teams called the Crackers.

I live in Oklahoma, which has the highest state percentage of Native American population and more tribal headquarters than any other state. One of the top football teams in the state over the last half century is the Union Redskins. The name has support among the Native American population. In Oklahoma, if the tribes want something, they get it.

For me, it is a non-issue. I don't care if teams keep the Indian names or change them. However, the issue should not be driven by the PC police or attorneys looking to make a buck, but decided by the Native American tribes.

Agreed. I'm 1/4 Cherokee and have no issue with it at all. I still think the name change is inevitable just with the direction society as a whole is going.
