1. The US has a right and obligation to know who is in the country.
2. We have a need for more workers than our naturalized population allows for.
3. The government's policies (and lack of enforcement) has created a "wink and a nod" encouragement of illegal immigration.
4. People who have "followed the rules" deserve the first shot at citizenship.
5. There should be a process that fairly considers illegal immigrants for citizenship.
6. The process should not be "automatic," and should take into consideration those who obeyed the rules.
7. Companies which willfully break the employment rules should be hammered.
8. The border should be secured by all means necessary. There will obviously be people who slip in… but it should be a light sprinkle and not a fire hose.
I agree with most of these points, except for #2. We have more than enough able-bodied people to work construction, tend to the fields, and all of the other occupations the illegals tend to pursue. The issue is that these folks have no motivation to get out and take any job that comes to them. The American Dream has become an entitlement program... not a pursuit, which in my opinion is a very dangerous thing. Every good characteristic about a society is only a generation away from being extinguished forever. I fear we are close to that point.
On the topic of Border Security. The border has to be secured first and foremost. Once that has been done to the satisfaction of the states that currently sit on the border, then we can discuss further reforms to guest worker programs, etc. I'd also like to see a 'check' to federal power in this case so that they can no longer use immigration as another weapon to play politics with. Whether this means allowing states to play a role in enforcing the border laws or some other idea, it's an item that must be solved. The child loophole needs to be closed/reformed as well. At this point the temporary programs can be put into place, and the businesses who hired these folks should be the ones that carry out the process. It would be hard to track, because so many of these illegals were paid in cash, but I think a reasonable amount of back taxes should be paid before the former illegal aliens are permitted to become full citizens.
