Y'all take some blocks of Colby, Cheddar, and Swiss to throw at Scott Cherry to go with all of his whine. Biggest crybaby coach in the Big South by far.

We had our chances down the stretch but couldn't hit when we needed to.

I know I'm being redundant but we're an Antwan Burrus away from winning these games. We are getting very little from our 4s and 5s.

Who cares? Aren't we always a player away from winning these games? The solution to our problems isn't to make excuses or think of the "ifs." We're not going to be winning any games until the culture around this team changes. Stats wise, you could make a case for how we would score more and allow less if he was playing. However, I would argue that him playing would have zero effect on our success. Good teams find ways to win, bad teams make themselves feel better about losing. I understand the point that you're trying to make but this is always the case. We're always coming up with reasons why we aren't competing. Just stop. Good programs find ways to win not excuses.

Let´s keep in mind who we were playing as well. 5 straight teams before us weren´t good enough to beat them and they are 10 and 3 in league play after a bit of a slow start. You can make a really good argument for High Point as the best team in the BSC right now. What that means for us is that we were good enough to play the best team in our conference very tough twice, but not quite good enough to beat them. Can we get just that little bit better? Unlike a lot of people on FF, I believe the talent is there.

Indiana?
Gonzaga?
Michigan?
Kansas?
No? This was a Big South team. A conference opponent. They are not some juggernaut that dominates our conference year in and year out. They were not some team that is making an amazing run this year. That has to be the worst excuse I have ever heard. I'm not saying we can't get better. I'm not saying we don't have the talent. But the above statement is a pitiful measuring stick for success, especially in the BSC. With these types of expectations we will never get better

Again, who cares about our competition??? It's the Big South! Not the ACC, C-USA or even for the love of God, the Sun Belt. We aren't winning games against Big South compeition! The talent might be there but when you continue to make excuses like this, you'll change nothing. Winning isn't always about talent or about X's and O's. There's a big point in sports that has to do with the leadership's determination for success. Watch Carey Green. Our ladies team almost always wins the Big South and even when we don't, we're still one of the top teams. I've never heard Green blame an injury for not winning. You don't hear him give many excuses about anything really. Why is it that when the guys team loses, everyone is first to jump to an excuse on why we could be winning these games? Newsflash! We weren't winning these games when Layer started and we aren't winning them now. If we were a struggling team in like the Sun-Belt or Colonial, I would feel quite differently. But we are always struggling in one of the worst conferences in the country. As bad as this conference is in football, it's even more laughable in basketball. Yet, we can't compete. At some point, you have to stop giving yourself excuses, man-up and realize that something within the Liberty men's basketball team is the problem. Honestly, I think it starts with this culture of being okay with losing. That has to change if we want to win.

VAGolf probably has the post(s) of the year. I'm so sick of the mediocre complacency that has developed, to the point where I can't even follow it anymore.

With our committment to athletics, and resources we have that far exceed anyone else in the Big South, we should be winning each, and almost every game in conference play.

What? He said the same thing I did and I posted it first! Typical big government Republican! :D

I just read my post a couple more times and have yet to see where I said that I was satisfied with losing. We lost to HP twice this year because we weren´t good enough on those 2 nights to beat them. You can badmouth the BSC all you want, but it is where we are now and our goals as a program are centered around winning this conference, not beating Indiana, Gonzaga or Michigan. I suggested that we have the potential to improve ever so slightly and beat the best team in our conference. If we can do that, there is no reason we can´t win 3 or 4 games and win the BSC tournament. Of course, why bother with that since it´s only the lowly BSC. Oh yeah, there is that little matter of a bid to the dance.

As far as resources are concerned, I really thought we had gotten past the idea that there is a direct correlation between money and winning. There isn´t. It certainly doesn´t hurt to have it, but you can´t apply standard business principles to college athletics.

Your quote was : Let's keep in mind who we were playing. That reeks of built in excuses. That's why I brought up teams where that line of reasoning would work. It's a pitiful excuse for a conference opponent, especially High Point.

the guys fought hard but in the end we have veteran players making huge mistakes. Yes the loss of Burrus has hurt and if we had him in the lineup it certainly would have helped, but all teams lose players due to injury so that is nothing but an excuse in my mind.

This has nothing to do with the previous posts...but man I was HIGHLY impressed with John Brown. High level athlete and is going to be a serious problem for years to come. He is a beast. I was also impressed with his sportsmanship. During a fast break him and JR got tripped up. JR went down bc of it and while High Point was on a fast break Brown stopped to help him up. Anyways the guy is going to tear the league up

I noticed that play too and talked about it on TV. That was an extremely rare gesture in the heat of battle. Seems like a great kid to do something like that. Yes he is going to be a terror in this league for years to come. He is probably going to be on an All Conference team to go with his certain Freshman of the Year award.

What I can´t understand is why this kid was redshirted. Was he injured, or did he just improve that much in the last year? It´s really hard to believe if he was healthy he would not have not made an impact last year for a team which could have used the help.

John Brown was 100% a non qualifier ... I know one Big South school that would not recruit him because his transcript was so bad (that school is south of of the border) -- High Point got lucky to get Cheney apparently their doctor's are smarter than Va Tech's.

I have to confess I may not be up to speed on all the rule changes. I take it you no longer lose a year of eligibility when you sit out as a non qualifier? Back in the day he would haved been a Sophomore this year. I remember that was the case with Marcus White at LU.
