by all accounts a nice guy... best of luck to him
interested to see what they can do down there- a rough situation

CHARLESTON, S.C. – After 10 seasons as at Charleston Southern University, Head Football Coach Jay Mills announced that he will retire from the helm of the Buccaneers’ program at a press conference on Thursday afternoon on the CSU campus.

Mills is retiring from coaching to pursue a career in athletic administration. He leaves as the winningest coach in CSU history and led the Bucs to countless new heights and milestones in his decade as the program’s head coach.

“My passion for athletics and my purpose of growing coaches and young people fuels an intentional change in my career path,” Mills said Thursday afternoon. “It is my desire, and I believe I am prepared, to lead not just a sport, but an athletic department to this end.”

interesting... no idea how a DI program makes this type of guarantee. gotta believe most guys coming in want to run their own show from top to bottom, or at least have the opportunity to interview the existing guys and make a decision on them personally.

Charleston Southern: According to the Post and Courier, all current assistant coaches will be retained by the new head coach. Charleston Southern has three openings on its staff. Athletic director Hank Smalls will come up with a list of head coaching candidates at next week's NCAA Coaches Convention and move quickly to fill the head coaching vacancy, he said.

I have observed a few staff turnovers where the current assistants were guaranteed one year. It's similar to your thinking of making a decision personally, Medic, it just takes longer.

It's interesting to me that he's so clear on what he believes the next step will be: "leading an athletic department". Makes me wonder if the next thing is already lined up?

A classy guy when I've been around him. Tough job for anyone there, and he made the most of it, and did so with class.

We've done this here at Liberty. So has UVA and Oregon.

football? all of them? wow- I don't remember that. Not saying you're wrong tho.

hoops maybe, but I don't recall keeping every position coach and both coordinators when the HC left.

then again, I didn't follow that closely when Morgan Hout left, I wasn't there when Rut left and when Karcher went I thought we cleaned house.

PS: Karcher is OUT at E. Michigan. Not many happy fans up there from what I read.

I said this on Flames Nation's post but what's sad is that Coach Mills could never quite get CSU over the hump and get them into that upper tier with LU and Coastal (and Stony Brook the last few years) and be a regular player for the Big South title. They did have that one shared title in 2005 but that really was about it.

You are right, not all of them. But there are 'coaches for life' at several schools.

Are they not happy he's out or not happy before he was out?

E.Mich fans irritated with the state of the program - upset with the lack of offensive production but many (from the very little I read) seemed to think KK was the fall-guy for a poor HC

Interesting. I've been told by several people who worked for him, that he is a little bit crazy to work for. But i never had any run ins with him so I wouldnt know. They are probably retaining the staff since its so close to signing day and having a whole new staff would completely kill a year in recruiting IMO.
