Why waste him this year? He's got a redshirt available and if that means we get him back at 100% next season, why not? Thoughts?

That would make sense, but Layer won't do it. He has to win this year and he's not holding anything back when BSC play starts. The BSC is not good this year, outside UNCA - so we still could compete (In theory)

So Coastal beating Clemson isn't a big deal? Didn't Winthrop scare a couple of teams too? :dontgetit

Most teams are better than us right now, but I don't think Winthrop or Coastal are as good as they have been. Not saying they aren't good, but just thinking if we play great - we should be able to compete.

If those teams can beat and compete with a lot of Big 6 teams it goes a ways to disproving your own 'the BSC is not good this year' statement. Especially when you hedge with 'IF we play GREAT- we SHOULD be able to COMPETE'. See what I mean? Great optimism though.

I totally agree with proto..............for now. Layer needs Burrus this year, and I'm pretty sure Twan wants to do everything he can to get on the court and help him keep his job.

But.............. if he is still not healthy enough to make a positive impact let's say by Jan 16-19, when we play HP and Presby at the Vines, I think it's time to start thinking about options. Of course whether he is on track to graduate or not would also be a big factor.

Something else to consider with this type of injury is the possibility that it just won't go away. He could sit out the entire year, and then one wrong step in a pickup game next summer and it's all down the drain.

Coastal beat Clemson last year too in Clemson. Coastal hammered them in Conway 69-46! That is impressive. Asheville looks really good to me too. I watched the Ohio State game and Hornsby went off. They will be in the thick of things and so will Charleston Southern. Winthrop is not as talented as any of those 3 and will still struggle to score at times but they are going to be tough.

The reality though is that with this season's format, the schools Liberty has to worry about are HPU, Radford and Campbell. Bottom line is if you finish in 1st or 2nd in the big south North then you get a 1st round bye and only have to win 3 games to win it all. Furthermore a high finish probably keeps you out of Coastal's bracket which means all your games will be neutral site games unless you see Coastal in the finals.

That said, I hope Antwan is just healthy enough to play whenever that might be. He is a great talent and has gotten better each year. He can definitely help Liberty win. I would like to see him this season especially if he could play by early January. If it goes much longer than that I would favor redshirting him. I have heard he is on pace to graduate though so he may want to just get through the semester and start life after college.

Gardner-Webb has been far and away the best team this year and Charleston Southern is rated the second best team in the conference. While the North Division isn't turning any heads, the South Division has four teams ranked in the top 200 in the country. It's not as much of a cake walk as you're making it out to be.

Never said cake walk... I just don't think the league is as strong as it has been in regards to top end talent which would make it impossible for us to compete. I agree there are some good teams, but no one that I mark as a definite lose if we shoot above 35%. I'm just saying we have a better chance with Burris, than without him and I think Layer will do anything he can to prove that his young team is improving and having a senior with lots of experience against BSC schools will not hurt.

I think there is zero chance we compete this year, just don't have the talent. I hate to be negative, but believe it is being realistic.

If Burrus was healthy all year they may have been .500 or slighlty better. There's a lot of role players on the team but no go to guys. Marshall & Gielo are the closest thing we have to go to go guys. Burrus is really hobbling still. I guess conference play is a little under 2 weeks away but i'd be shocked if he plays soon the way he was hobbling.

I have absolutely no clue as to Antwan's current state of health, and I'm not sure what you mean when you say "hobbled", but I would caution against jumping to conclusions based on observation of his movement on the sideline. I'm assuming he had a boot on. Nobody walks normally in a boot, even when they are pain free and only wearing it for precautionary reasons. If he still has significant pain from weight bearing, he would probably be on crutches.

I do have questions as to how this injury was handled early on though. He was initially hurt in early practice, but they didn't think it was a big deal. Then he was cleared to play in the meaningless Blue/White game, and that's the last he has seen the court. I hope the 50 or so fans who saw that exhibition enjoyed the show.

All you have to do is watch him on the bench, you can tell he's pretty sore, the grimmaces just getting up and down. If it moves the wrong way he grimmaces just moving around on the bench. I would be shocked if he plays anytime soon and if he does that he has his normal game.

Kudos to Coach Layer for doing the right thing for the athlete, even though he knows it may hurt his chances of keeping his job.

I never doubted it either but this just proves it. Also there was a little bit more I wanted to add to that post but I controlled myself.
