The Big East name should go to the Catholic 7 and whoever they select to join them. These schools and their basketball programs were the foundation on which the league was built, not a bunch of mediocre football schools from conference USA.

AMEN!

On a different note, if the MWC loses some teams to the nBE, I guess that could still help us if the MWC decides to pluck one or two C-USA schools. Should be interesting where the nBE goes.

1. Have you seriously considered Liberty University as an all-sports member of the Big East Conference? If not, are you aware of the extreme potential we offer a prospective conference? Are you aware that some of our programs are funded at a higher rate than current Big East schools when looking at scholarships, recruitment, travel, equipment budgets, and staff? Are you aware that we finished 95th in the NACDA Director's Cup Standings last year, ahead of the following Big East programs -

110. Marquette
110. Rutgers
131. Pitt
149. Providence
182. DePaul

And finished head of countless CUSA and Sun Belt schools? Are you aware the commitment we have made to athletics, and are you aware of our ability to fund that commitment to a level equal or greater than that of any current Big East university?

That was the point. It sounds better to say we finished higher than Pitt and Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, than Tulane, etc.

His response is a good reflection of why the Big east is in the position they are in. He said NOTHING. Geno Toretta ( QB Heisman winner from Miami when they had a team) Jumped in due to Mikes silence and said "University of phoenix wants a spot in the big east too but they don't have a campus"......It was a BS statement, because I said we had close to 100K if you include online. They didn't have a legit come back so they picked out one little stupid detail and threw it back as a response. But I gave him all the stats (per Logics research) I could spit out in the 35 sec slot they gave me

Which goes back to the debate of the value of our online foot print. I don't think Geno's opinion is unique.

Shouldn't have gone anywhere near online. Whether its right of wrong, no one cares about online students outside of the Liberty bubble. Should have went with money talks instead. Money is their language and we have more of it than they do. To that fact they will sit up and take notice.

* LUO awesome? Yes. As in allowing us to build a 50 mil library awesome.
* Asset to the table? Yes, see above.

However I wouldn't say anything about LUO when talking to a commissioner from the Big East except something along the lines of "it allows us the financial freedom to do what is necessary to compete in your conference" or something similar. You approach LUO from a money standpoint, you don't try to impress those guys with talk of 100k students and the like. The only enrollment number that matters to them is students on campus.

When people ask me how many students go to my school I reply 13,000, as that is a true representation of our size, not 100,000 and that is why you heard the Phoenix joke from that show...

The last 48 hours have proven to be highly entertaining on the Big East/MWC front as the football-playing remnants of the New Big East are involved in scores of rumors. While word on the street is that Boise State is all but gone from the nBE lineup, they have become the subject of a vast array of theories.

Dennis Dodd from CBS had the most entertaining rumor yesterday ...
CBSsports.com wrote:Colorado State, New Mexico interested in forming new league

Representatives from Colorado State and New Mexico have shown preliminary but informal interest in forming a new conference that would have Boise State and/or BYU as its foundation, CBSSports.com has learned.

It's not clear what other schools would be added, but it's obvious the race is on to establish the most dominant conference below the five power conferences going forward in 2014 (Big Ten, Pac-12, Big 12, ACC, SEC). CBSSports.com reported earlier this week that the Big East had reached out to UNLV and Fresno State to shore up its shaky prospects on the football side.

This latest development might be a reciprocal answer to the Big East's move. Whatever conference in the so-called Group of Five (MAC, Conference USA, Mountain West, Sun Belt, Big East) emerges as the strongest, it would have the best chance of getting the automatic berth that goes to the highest ranked of the group's champions beginning in 2014.

While BYU has had little to no interest in giving up their TV rights to the nBE or MWC, if a new league were formed where they could have a Texas-style arrangement to maintain their own 3rd tier rights then anything is possible. The thinking seems to be that by starting up a new league they could more or less create a best of the two parties to assure themselves of the Big East's old seat at the BCS/Playoffs table. Consider a league like this in comparison to the other schools in the Gang of Five (Go5):
  • Air Force (Colo Spgs #89/Denver #17 & AF Nation)
    Boise State (Boise #111)
BYU (SLC #33 & Mormon Nation)
    Houston (Hou #10)
    Memphis (Mem #49)
    New Mexico (Abq #47)
    San Diego State (SD #28)
    SMU (DFW #5)
    Tulane (NOLA #51)
    UNLV (LV #40)
That's a league with less dead weight than either of the existing two leagues made up of schools in cities on the Mississippi River & west. Of course there would be no automatic bids for a few years in non-football sports. But a league of those schools would be multi-bid in hoops anyway. In fact, it could be argued that this new league would be a stronger hoops conference than football. This is all assuming that Cincy & UConn are off the table as everyone is beginning to presume. Those two schools seem to believe they are just waiting for the call from the ACC as soon as the next two schools are poached ... a circumstance that seems slightly more likely by each passing day.

I like that league SLY. It gives you the benefit of being somewhat Regional while having a National appeal. Meaning a team from San Diego isn't in the Big EAST. Say what you will but there is intrinsic brand value in geography like that. Which is why I think UNC to the B1G isn't a good move. GT at least has academic type ties. It's easier to verbalized than type.
I would offer up the Heartland Conference but I think it's already taken

It's all about the TV contract for the Big East. The Central VA TV market is a nobody market compared to an area like New Orleans. Liberty isn't a "name brand" school to put people in front of their TV to make up for the lackluster TV market either, unlike a school like Boise State with their football team.
