The WAC didn't expand for lack of effort. The eastern branch concept never developed because those of us in the mix were all waiting to see what possibilities were opening up due to other realignment. Why jump to the WAC if an opening in CUSA, MAC or Sun Belt comes available? Most of our likely partners in a WAC-East concept either have already been picked by other conferences (ODU, Charlotte, Georgia State) or are likely to be selected soon (i.e. Appy & Georgia Southern). Basically there remain just a few schools left on the outside looking in right now that might bite at the WAC FBS apple to join NM State & Idaho.

Frankly our focus right now should be on the Mountain West meetings allegedly underway to see what type of impact it might have on the non-BCS landscape. If the MWC is able to wrestle some of the western schools such as Tulsa, UTEP & Rice away from CUSA, It could throw the entire Conference USA door wide open. CUSA would likely dip into the Sun Belt & FCS ranks to replenish in the eastern two time zones as they shift gears from a national alignment to more of a Eastern half of the US alignment. There are even some rumors that CUSA could merge with the Sun Belt if they were picked clean by the Mountain West. That scenario would be our worst nightmare.

I am not saying you are wrong, because it makes quite a bit of sense that this would not be ideal(Not just because of the travel costs) but I would think that if the WAC was serious about staying an FBS conference they would have sent enough offers to schools to stay FBS eligible.
Yeah. You're new! :D With the exception of 1 or 2 on here everyone feels we should take ANY invite to the FBS level. Even if it means carting our teams off to Art Bell land! ( ok I can't remember if it was the East of theRockies or West of the Rockies that had the special phone line :D )

It could be a football only option somewhere which is why he said its not ideal. If that's our only FBS option I gotta think he would entertain it. Get fbs then try to negotiate all sports in later realignment.

Being that I am up at 3 am for work each morning, I am pretty confident it is East of the Rockies. +1 for the coast-to-coast reference. If the new guy is allowed a +1 to give.

CUSA would be more than ideal. How do we make it happen? Could we strong arm our way in? Offer to pay an entry fee? Is that allowed? Bribery? Legal bribery of course?

Wouldn't it be nice to actually go to a Conference where we are wanted? It is a lot more seemly then trying to 'pay for it'.

If I were truly a hater I would say his life insurance policy helped out a lot. And I would also say that blindly following a persons vision doesn't end up well in the history books.

But I'm not. Again I'm just pointing out that this is the ONLY reason explaining this move. I will also point out that my other question regarding this move has never been answered nor do I expect it to be.

Haize, I would disagree with this statement. Suppose Jerry Sr. never said we'll compete with Notre Dame some day and so forth. Imagine he never said we'll have 25,000 students and the whole bit. Never said anything about FBS football, facilities, NCAA Division I and so on. From what you know about Jerry Jr, do you think he would be the type to want to remain a small bible college? I do believe that even if Jerry Sr. had never made public that vision, Jerry Jr. would have brought it forward at some point. The man loves to build. He understands the unique niche that Liberty could/would/can/will fill - the only school in the world with top Division I athletics, top academics, a huge, big-time campus feel, and all the while maintaining the close-knit culture of a small bible college. How many other school presidents do you know who operate heavy machinery in their spare time, and helped demolish buildings for their own campus construction projects?

You like to talk about God's plans and God's timing, Haize.. check out the 4th page of the Liberty website. Jerry Jr says - "Liberty University was God's idea before it was my father's" I do believe that Haize, furthermore leading me to believe that our FBS move is NOT just because Sr. wanted it. Could it be because God wants it?

A Few Good Reasons to go FBS, with no disrespect to the smaller religious affiliated schools mentioned alongside the people playing big boy football -

Which school is - More popular? Has more influence? More prestige? More alumni? More students? Has the power to do more?

1. Cedarville or Ohio State?
2. Gardner-Webb or North Carolina?
3. Biola or pick one of - Southern Cal / Stanford / UCLA / Berkeley?
4. Bob Jones or South Carolina? Clemson?
5. Pensacola Christian or pick one - Miami, FSU, UF ?
6. Grove City or Penn State?
7. Indiana Wesleyan or IU? Purdue?
8. Wheeling Jesuit or West Virginia?
9. Mercer or UGA?
10. Oklahoma Baptist or Boomer Sooner, Oklahoma State?

I do believe that regardless of what Sr. had said, Jerry Jr would have still wanted more for Liberty than remaining with the Biola or Cedarville types. This isn't a bad thing either Haize, and it isn't selfish to want to be where Alabama/Notre Dame are right now and not Bob Jones or Gardner-Webb.

Without a cynical comment about cost and perceived recognition, What do you want Haize? Would you want to be where Notre Dame is right now playing against Alabama, or remain with the FCS laymen of the world that wallow in obscurity?
