I've followed Liberty basketball since graduating in 1996. It's difficult for me to understand why Liberty can't be more successful in basketball. 7-8 good players is all is takes to have a good competitive team. In my opinion there is no reason why a decent coach couldn't attract quality kids and players to Liberty. Football is much more difficult due to the number of quality kids it takes. If things don't change quickly and I'm Barber I would think a mid-season change may need to be made to show you're serious about winning. This seasons is embarrassing.

i agree. layers recruiting has been absolutely awful. we need players who are athletic and will stay on the team for more than 1 or 2 years.

If you can't get talent, no coach no matter how great he may be is going to win. Talent trumps everything. Even horrible coaches like Josh Pastner, Scott Drew, and Rick Barnes win games because they get talent.

Those guys may or may not be great with xs and os or as teachers and motivators, but if they have talent, then they are not horrible coaches. Recruiting is the most important part of their job.

Calipari said he would take talent over experience anyday. Talent and ability is what wins games. I don't want to offend, but the overall talent on this team appears to be the worst I've seen in a while.

Which is why Calipari isn't a revered coach. It's becoming apparent that experience plays a bigger part than in years past in college basketball.

Agreed. Kentucky's win last year was more of an exception rather than the rule. They'll always be in the hunt but will have a hard time recreating that same type of magic.

I think it's obvious that Layer excels as an assistant but the experiment as head coach has to be just about over.

Can't believe all the Calipari bashing in this thread.... Dude can coach,

UMASS = Final 4
Memphis = Final 4
Kentucky = 2 Final 4's and 1 title!

Regardless if you think he cheats, he's still coaching -- and all the Big Boys are dirty -- it's shady at the high levels. Also look at Memphis & UMASS now, both suck!

UMass was his best coaching job. He's done nothing to increase those credentials. The guy can recruit, no doubt about it. His system is to have more talent on the floor then his opponent. If that doesn't happen he has demonstrated that he can't develop players to make them better when they leave then when they got there. His teams fold under pressure. Look at his Memphis team against Kansas. Sometimes talent isn't enough.

Of course, according to the NCAA he's only been to the Final 4 with UK.

I would say Kansas had a few pros as well.... dang he lost to them at the buzzer for the title. Dude can coach and recruit!

Haize was being sarcastic, Chippy. You should assume that going into each of his posts. His Hoosier boy Dakich in particular is a riot.

Liberty couldn't touch Pearl with him being dishonest to the NCAA. I'm not sure a big name is needed, but rather someone who can can identify and develope talent.

I didn't mean to turn this into a Cal thread, but for what it's worth Cal is a fantastic coach. The ability to have 6 or 7 superstars on a team and to get them to buy into a team concept is amazing. Darius Miler went from bring a starter to coming of the bench last year and he was fine with it and ended up getting drafted in the second round.

Apparently you have forgotten Josh Harrelsoon. Dude was a nobody for two years then as a senior he outperformed Jared Sullinger head-to-head and was drafted. If that's not development then there isn't a coach in America that develops talent.

Oh, and FYI, that Kansas team had more future NBA pros and draft picks on it than Memphis did. It's amazing how many people forget that. Calipari didn't start having rotations full of all NBA players until he got to Kentucky.

Kansas had Cole Aldrich, Darrell Arthur, Mario Chalmers, Sherron Collins, Darnell Jackson, Sasha Kaun, and Brandon Rush. Memphis had Robert Dozier, Joey Dorsey, CDR, and Derrick Rose. Yes, Derrick Rose was the best, but Kansas had more talent without a doubt.

He's not coaching, he's recruiting. Give his talent to a good coach, and you'd see a resume with a lot more Final 4s and more of those listed converted into National Titles.
