Gill and his OL coach decided to redshirt Grant this year. They feel he will benefit from another year of maturity and preperation. I think you could argue it should have been done last year, but he was such a prized recruit, I think Rocco and staff felt obligated to play him.

Allen York (or someone on radio) said this was biggest win in LU history. I do know it's first time in a while we have won "the big game". I wish the Big South could find a better tie breaker for 3 way ties. they always go against LU.

They have one... it's called "win" and don't end up in this scenario!

This is the first time I can remember that we have won a big, big game when we've needed it. There have been some great wins since Rocco turned the program around but there has rarely been a time we won we absolutely needed it.

2008 vs Elon - the win and we're in game against a higher ranked opponent. We came out and dominated the game, sending a message to the committee that they just didn't get. Haha

2010 vs Stony Brook - another game that was supposed to get us to the playoffs if we win. We stepped up and dominated the second half, and won going away. Again, the committee didn't see it that way.

There were legit reasons we didn't get in both seasons. But that doesn't change the fact that these were huge games that we won.
Those games were both hail mary games, that were dependent on getting the committees attention. This one kept us in the hunt - despite needing help from Chuck South.

We need more Roanoke Talent. Congrats Ronnie. I thought you guys were gonna take a dive into the lower section after that pick six.

Don't bump into ballcoach, he thinks we need more Dogwood talent!

The selection committee did do us in those 2 years, and showed bias toward CAA schools. I do not care for any CAA school as a result.

Why are some posters on here 'down" on our AD ? Personally I think he's doing a great job, and we're lucky to have him. Now with that being said there are 2 HC changes I would make if I were AD

This was not the biggest victory in the history of the school at all, MAYBE top 5. However, it was the first time in a long while that we won a game, that on paper, we had little to no chance to win. Unfortunately, we have lost more games that we had no business losing ie. Presby, Norfolk St. etc.

It is my hope that this game is the beginning of a reversal of this trend. That is the evidence of a program going in the right direction IMHO. However in the last 10-12 years coaching changes have resulted in running different styles of offenses and defenses. Continuity will be helpful, but not sure it is practical right now. Time will tell.

Just my opinion:
Eastern Michigan Away
Youngstown State Away
Boise State Away (I can't find a record on this one, I may have dreamed it up, not sure).
Ball State Away
App St. Away
JMU Away
Central Florida Home

I would say these are certainly bigger or close to it. I am going by memory, so I may not be 100% correct (Little fuzzy on Boise State, believe SR was head coach then).

If Stony Brook was for a sure trip to the playoffs, it would rank in the top 3 for sure, probably #1. Again IMVVHO, won't argue if someone feels differently. Regardless of where it ranks, it was a great win for Coach Gill and the guys. Very proud of them for sure.

Not to be contrarian, but none were ranked as high as SBU. We got crushed at Boise State; I still remember listening to Jerry Edwards talk about their blue field. Also, we beat JMU several times at their place. The year we won at Youngstown, we were just one of a series of losses that left them with a very bad season.

I posted it because I had hoped to spur some debate and now that people are talking about the biggest wins in school history it could be revisited

97 was the year I thought we would get in. I was genuinely surprised when we didn't.

rogers3, I´m pretty sure flameshaw is referring to a different win at Youngstown State than you are. I can´t remember the year, but in one of Youngstown´s national championship seasons, we were the only team to beat them.

I'd usally remember such a big game, but maybe I missed it. A quick review of our schedules will tell. We did have a win over JMU in a somewhat similar situation, though they weren't heading to a NC.

I think olldflame is referring to the 1991 season. We beat YSU 10-8 at their place, and that year they did win the NC. Note though, that they were ranked #28 when we played them and they had also lost to Delaware St. and Akron that year. Big win, but not one I would consider a top 5.

As is too often the case these days, my memory was a little sketchy on the details. We were not the only team to beat YSU in 91, but we were the LAST team to beat them before they went on an undefeated run leading to a championship.

We have had some wins against good programs that newbies wouldn't remember. Youngstown, Appy St., Cal Poly, Villanova, JMU, and others. An out-of-conference win against any ranked FCS team is a big win.
