And I'm sure his iPhone hardware was magically updated to use LTE with the iOS 6 update.

Did you guys hear about the new feature on the Samsung Galaxy GIII?

The one where anyone can upload a file through NFC (or email/web/etc), gain root on your device and suck all of the data off?

No?

Well, here you go: http://labs.mwrinfosecurity.com/blog/20 ... west-2012/

Currently unpatched by Google in ICS. And after it is patched, good luck getting an update from your phone carrier to fix it.

Of all people though you understand security enough to know that security holes are nothing unique to one platform. Where there's a will there's a way now a days.

It's true. Security is the great equalizer. On the other hand, there are two interesting parts to this:

1. The NFC angle is novel. And not particularly good. *Bump* "You've got malware!"

2. Security vulnerabilities are not unique to one platform, but only patching them at the carrier's discretion is. The Android OS update model is particularly bad when viewed from the security POV. That's why I chose to highlight this freshly published vuln.

And then there's the Android permissions model. That's another bag of hurt. I watched a presentation on it at a security conference in May. The presenter could only partially disclose the information she wanted because Google was going to sue her if she talked about it in the U.S. She presented the full details somewhere in Europe about a week later. Now that's a walled garden.

So my pre-order is available for pick up tonight at 7. I am going to give it a try. I figure I've got 14 days.

The new Samsung commercial making fun of the iPhone people is amazing.

I still want the new iPhone but I'll give credit where it's due for the commercial.

The maps definitely need some work. The first thing I did Wednesday after downloading iOS 6 to my 4s was try out the maps. I put in the address of a place of business I wanted to check out but had never visited. The turn by turn directions took me into a residential neighborhood and told me I arrived at my destination when I was driving by a patch of woods. The correct location was actually about a mile away from the place it took me. Not a good start. Unfortunately, I still haven't found a maps app that I like.

Apple Maps are so bad that towns are either misplaced or completely missing. Yep, that's much better than the excellent Google Maps.
Yep, the new maps are not up to snuff with the polish I expect from Apple. On top of that, Google has a multi-year head start and an immeasurable amount of user contribution to compete with. Not a great start to their own map service, but the cord had to be cut. You can't rely on your direct competitor.

I use the Garmin Navigon app for turn-by-turn anyway, and I just saved the Google Maps app to my folder of navigation/maps apps. So... I'll be okay until they get the bugs worked out. I expect more, and if they fail to correct it to the level I've come to expect over the years, then I'll be the first to admit they have a problem. I have no problem criticizing when it's deserved.

Is that the one that's like $50? I'm looking for something that's good and free.

+1 My experience has been great, but I have read quite a bit more since the release. Again, the "3D's" and "Flyover" goofs are funny but mostly insignificant (imo). Taking someone to a patch of woods a mile away is another issue altogether. FWIW - I have been misled by google maps before and don't like to rely on any electronic map / gps to get me where I am going. I love to razz my father-in-law for taking a two hour detour by following his gps without double checking the route.

I'm telling you...if there was ever such a thing as a friendly terrorist they would hack into our GPS systems and having everyone running in circles...I'm telling you it would cause mass chaos and frustration...which would be my end goal since I'm only a friendly terrorist.

Every major release is the fastest for about 15 minutes. Enjoy it while it lasts. The iPhones usually have been able to hold that distinction for at least a few weeks. Of course, the next 48 or so weeks until the next release it is back to the back of the bus.

Oh yeah, just ignore the fact that those benchmarks are measured vs. the stock Android browser. When you are in the walled garden, 3rd party keyboards and browsers are far too scary to ever experience. Only Apple is safe to trust. We Android folks clearly shouldn't trust Google's Chrome, Opera or any other outside vendor. Please feel sorry for us. SwiftKey ... shudder.

You know why I like the iPhone? My company bought it and pays for the service. Would probably feel the same way if they had chosen to go Android. As long as it's not part of my monthly bills, I'll take it.

I'm with you, Chris. But when you enter the self-employed world, these decisions require a little more thought. I'd even put up with a BlackBerry if somebody else were paying for it. Well, perhaps I wouldn't go that far.

No doubt. Not sure I would have ever gone the smartphone route unless the paper paid. I was still using a flip Samsung as recently as March. Now I can't imagine living without it, even for simple stuff of being able to check on the O's-Sox/Yanks-A's pennant race games between plays while covering high school football last night.

Oh, and as far as music goes, Spotify is the ticket. I pay $10 a month for the premium and get access to tons and tons of streaming music. So much better than buying individual albums or singles any more.

I use Slacker Radio myself as Spotify has been on the wrong side of ripping off artists for a while now, but the ability to hear what you want and discover new artists is amazing these days.

I got mine yesterday. Apple just makes great phones. I sold my Iphone 4 for $180, so I'm pretty happy for the upgrade!

Verizon is giving away iPhone 4 handsets as of today. Congrats on the $180 sale.

Mrs. Sly is debating whether to cave to peer pressure and get an iPhone 5 or to get a real phone. She knows where I stand. But she's the one who has to carry it around.

Amazon buyback program is buying them for $170-$220 depending on the condition of the phone. I had it on Craigslist for 5 minutes and had 2 offers. CRAZY! I ended up selling it to a friend. I think I could have easily gotten $200.
