OK, how many of you Apple addicts will be drooling over the latest announcement of a handset tomorrow?

I have to admit that I have gone from reluctant appreciation of earlier models to laughing out loud at how lame the newer models have been. I get that it still seems to relay some form of status, but come on ... shouldn't the device at least be at least a little innovative to merit the adoration?

Thoughts?

I got sucked into the hype of the 4s last fall. Big disappointment. Sure, it was a minor upgrade over my old 3Gs, but it wasn't that big of a deal. Siri sucks and I'm not reading anything earth shattering about the new one. I won't be upgrading to the 5 any time soon.

Fair enough. What is your take on the current group of Sansung Android handsets?

You know why I will be upgrading to an iPhone 5?

Because I have upgraded to every new model since the original at zero cost to me. I've always been able to sell the one in my pocket for the same or greater price as the cost of the upgrade. Last time I made a profit of $150 selling my iPhone 4 to upgrade to the 4S. This time I've already got a locked in quote from Gazelle.com for $370 for the 4S currently in my pocket. I could get more if I sold it on eBay or Craigslist, but I'd rather take the easy route.

Economics aside, I don't see what was lame about the 4 or 4S unless you just don't use the camera at all. My wife still has the 4 and there's a dramatic improvement in low-light still capabilities between my phone and hers. Not to mention jumping up to 1080p video from 720p. And let's not forget that the 4 brought the Retina display. Seems like old hat now, but no one was close at the time.

I don't think there will be much of an upgrade for the new model, though. A bigger screen, faster processor and more memory. That's about all I'm expecting in the way of serious features. Oh, and more battery. Let's not forget that every single model has brought dramatic battery improvements, which is par for the course with anything from Apple these days.

I'll laugh at the folks overpaying for an inferior phone and OS while I upgrade to the Galaxy S III as soon as I have the extra cash.

Honestly, I don't care. I have wanted an iPhone since before there were ever rumors of one. I have wanted a phone/calendar/timer/camera/iPod that flawlessly syncs with my computer since I got my first iPod. The iPhone does that for me. I also love the app store.

It is funny that you bash the iPhone for not being innovative. There was NOTHING like it when it came out, and nothing has been really able to compete with it since. Samsung owes Apple 1 Billion + for ripping Apple off. Google even warned Samsung beforehand that they had crossed the line. I know that one Samsung model past the 4s in sales this month… only because everyone knows the 5 is coming out tomorrow. The iPhone 5 will reign supreme for another 10-11 months.

hopefully for me, its all back end improvement to the iOs. our company as well as every other company that sells different software and hardware to schools who are buying the crap out of ipads have been waiting for apple to make concessions for vendors to be able to do some of the things we need to do. we have schools buying hundreds of ipads and then are like, ok. how do we filter or how do we do this or that or how do we lock proxy settings. sorry. we can only manipulate our app.

ios 6 is what is what i care about.

the three click lock so that my 2 year old can be locked into an app will be nice too.

i'll be upgrading to a 4s end of october from the 3gs.

Same here. I don't know why it's taken them so long to get the Do Not Disturb feature added. I feel like it's been an obvious gap since push mail/notifications came along. (This, for the unaware: http://www.imore.com/ios-6-preview-do-n ... d-me-later)

Do go ahead and list all of the ways that iOS and the (year old) iPhone hardware are inferior. Please.

I'm interested to see what Android features they steal this time around. Apple is ever so quick to blab their mouth about Microsoft stealing stuff from them yet stole a whole slew of stuff from Android for the iPhone 4/4s and the latest major release of iOS.

I won't go so far as to say the current gen iPhone is inferior in general - although it is inferior to the SIII without a doubt - but I do insist and always will that it is overpriced when compared to the price points for the top phones on Android.

I'm pretty sure that's gone evenly both ways. Though a lot of things I've seen people accuse Apple of stealing from Android are actually things that both parties took from iOS jailbreak devs. Seriously. A ton of stuff in both OS's came from those guys. That's where the real innovation happens.

You're comparing a phone that came out three months ago to a phone that came out a year ago. That's a lot of time in terms of mobile tech. (And good luck getting timely software updates for a Samsung device.)

I'm pretty sure the subsidized prices are exactly the same.

I know the Apple OS and iOS.

I like the Apple OS and iOS.

I'm going to stay with Apple. There may be some other products that are just as good but I prefer Apple's products based purely on what I like to us.

Who me? If I owned more then an iPhone, iPad and 8 yo iPod you'd be right! I see no reason to buy a Mac Book, iPad Touch or another iPod. I just like the convenience of transferring music and pics on the same devices. I'm sure you can do it between other devices but I find this easier.

That's not really true. In terms of functionality? Mostly, but with notable exceptions. (Real web browsing, a real OS and multi-touch display being chief among them.) Just for reference, here's a timeline of Nokia phones up to 2007 (when the original iPhone came out):

http://www.newlaunches.com/entry_images ... meline.php

HTC and Palm also had some phones out that had more functions than the original iPhone. What the Nokia, HTC and Palm phones all had in common is that they were big ugly bricks that were HORRIBLE to use. The web browsers were not web browsers. Has everyone forgotten WAP pages already? There were no multi-touch displays on phones. There were no glass screens. If you wanted to connect your phone to WiFi or 3G, you had to be prepared to carry an extra extended battery around with you all day. I had a Palm Treo. I had an HTC Apache. There was a Motorola Q in my house. Those phones were THE WORST.

The state of smartphones in 2007 was pretty atrocious.

the only real innovation with the iphone was the touch screen and the app store.... we have a graveyard of nokia and palm phones here in the office and when you start them up, you are kind of impressed with what they could do back then. some of them are more functional than some of the crap put out now. Nokia's E6 and 7 series phones were pretty usable and actually had a good browser .
