OK, I realize everything is subjective. But as my family heads out on the road for our family summer vacation I would love to hear some musical suggestions. No, I don't listen to much music normally while I am in the car. I'm an Old Hag so I generally live int he talk radio world. In our car we rotate music with the kids and I'd like some fresh stuff to counteract the Go Fish.

The music we listen is needtobreathe, Switchfoot, Matthew West, tobyMac (don't hate) and Red. While I am down with LeCrae, my wife isn't so we'll have to pass.

Since I buy new music like once every year or so, what is there that stands out from the above genres from the past 12 months or is just coming out?

Right now, I am planning on getting Vice Verses (yeah, I know) and something else.

Any suggestions for the old fart?

Mp3million. Name it and yo can download it. I just downloaded about 3 Petra albums ( Beat the System!) for about 2.50. You will have more music then you know what to do with
I also downloaded Motörhead Essentials for like .80 but that's because I was watching LEMMY on Paladia.

Yep. I cussed the guy out who showed me the site. It's funny, I put $40 in my account and still have a ton left!
(of course he is the singer in the band While Heaven Wept, so he knows his stuff. Yes. That was a shameless plug.)

If you're going to limit it to "Christian" music, then check out Noisetrade.com. Derek Webb (formerly of Caedmon's Call) and a few others started it. You can get everything there for free if you want.

I downloaded Kevin Max's latest from Noisetrade. Derek was worship leader at the YoungLife at Mrs. Sly's high school back in the day.

Thanks for the suggestions. And yeah, I do try to stick with Christian-themed music while driving with the kids. Yeah, I suppose I'm close minded. Whatever.

Nah, I'm just in agreement with folks like DW that there isn't such a thing as Christian music. Some of his best stuff wouldn't be allowed in most conservative churches.

There's a new Jars of Clay compilation on Noisetrade that includes yet another different mix of Flood.

He went to our church as a kid and our pastor asked him to not do a couple of his more controversial songs when he played here a couple of years back. To his credit, he didn't argue even though he admitted he disagreed with the suggestion because he is a firm believer in pastoral authority in the church.

Yeah, I get the whole "There's no such thing as Christian music" concept. That's why I used the Christian-themed vernacular. It is all semantics to me.

When I was younger, I listened to just about everything but not much Christian music. That is because it was basically a cheap ripoff of the secular music. Now days, Christian music has stepped it up and become original. There is tons of variety and talent. As a dad, it is 95% of what we listen to. It's called building a foundation.

I'd second the Starfield, my kids love them.

And while their lyrics aren't Christian-themed, you should give Eisley a try. My kids love their first two albums. They're Christians and a couple of their songs actually were played on Christian radio stations because I think people did think they were a Christian band. And to make it even more appealing to you, they're Tyler (TX)-based.

But seriously, if you're talking summer driving music, all you need is the Beach Boys.

This is a must when my wife and I travel home to Maryland. Eisley is innovative and that is rare these days. If you want another cool artist, check out Levi Weaver. He is a christian, his dad is a pastor at rodeos all over the southwest, and he is also from Texas (currently Nashville). His two newest albums are the Letters of Dr. Kurt Goedel and I am a tiny noise(ep). I recommend them both.

BLASPHEMY! I loved CCM back in the 80's. Sure there were some 'rip off' artists but think of the talent that started back then and look where they are now! I think it has become too similar now. My wife listens to Spirit FM all the time and every song sounds the same to me. Now if I listened to it more I'm sure I could pick out the differences but I just go back to the 'oldies' :D

I listen to Spirit FM in the evenings because a friend of mine is the nighttime voice for the station. Their program director is actually also the PA announcer for football and basketball.

we get air1 here and klov. klove is awful with its monotonous selection. air1 seems to be geared to a younger crown and gets more play in our vehicle. but our kids are listening usually to kiddy crap when in the car anyway.

Itd be nice if a station would tailor some of their programming (if not have an entire station) toward the ones of us who were in elementary and middle school when folks like Steven Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, MIchael W Smith, Michael Card. Michael English and the other artists of the late 80s up to the mid 90s were what was on the radio.

I just downloaded this album, and it's not bad at all. If you like Lecrae, this may be worth a listen.
