A third option is rebuilding the WAC with programs from the Football Championship Subdivision (Division I-AA) that could be pressured to make the jump to the Football Bowl Subdivision level (Division I-A).

It has been reported a new 10-year moratorium could be implemented for programs looking to make such a move, meaning they either jump soon, or risk biding their time - for a while - before such an opportunity comes again.

Schools such as Montana and Montana State, Eastern Washington, Cal-Poly, and even an Appalachian State and Georgia Southern, are all possible FCS programs that could look to make such a jump in the near future.

"When you think about reinventing the WAC, you have to look at all possibilities, including looking east and west," Boston said. "The only way FCS schools can move to the FBS level is (by joining) an existing conference. ... That is a strength of the WAC at the moment. We (provide) an (outlet) for FBS football."

I think from all the internet fodder and what Benson said, that we have 6 teams in:
Idaho
New Mexico St
Liberty
App State
GA Southern
Jax State

We need at least 2 more.
I'm banking on the NCAA waiver as it pertains to transitional years!

Unfortunately, most of the teams being considered for the new WAC do not have good t.v. markets. This is one of the reasons why most of the teams are still left. In order to get t.v. money, you must put out a good product. The SEC is famous for this. One the other hand, the ACC have great markets, but a sucky football product. If the new set of WAC teams win, it makes the WAC look good, thus increasing the value of the conference. More value = More money.

HMM. TOMORROW?????
Paging Sly. Paging a Lawyer.
from the bylaws:
20.4.2.1.2 Notification/Application Requirement. The chancellor or president from a Football
Championship Subdivision institution that intends to petition for reclassification to the Football Bowl Subdivision,
per Bylaw 20.4.2, shall submit to the national office written notice of the institution’s intention to
reclassify and a completed application. The notice and application shall be received in the national office (by
mail or electronic transmission) not later than June 1 two years prior to the August 1 when the institution
intends to reclassify to the Football Bowl Subdivision. Any form received after June 1 shall be postmarked
not later than May 25. The notice and application shall be accompanied by a $5,000 fee and a strategic plan
that addresses the Division I philosophy statement (see Bylaw 20.9) and the athletics certification program
operating principles (see Bylaw 22.2). If the institution fails to qualify for membership in the Football Bowl
Subdivision, the application fee shall be refunded, less any expenditure for educational costs related to the
reclassification process. (Adopted: 4/28/05, Revised: 3/8/06, 12/15/06, 1/15/11 effective 8/1/11)

I honestly don't know the answer to that question. If I had to guess, you'd have to be in a conference effective July 1, which is the start of the academic fiscal year. I'll ask around tomorrow.

I'm honestly fine if we don't get in by 2013. I would rather have a year to wait and let the Sun Belt get settled and the MAC figure things out first before we rush into a conference that's been a proven failure. Sure, I would have loved the invite but not being in by 2013 could work out better, long term.

But what about the 10-year moratorium that has been thrown around? I've only heard rumors, but what if it is true? We certainly would want to go now while we still can than have to wait 3,4,5 or 10 years from now. That would set us back quite a bit!

Yes, but I think that moratorium isn't being considered until year after next. So, basically, next year is hit or miss. Could be wrong about that.

I still think there is a possibility we could be given an invitation in the interim whereby we can get our transition clock ticking regardless of everyone else being in on the plan. The WAC has nothing to lose by offering it right away except extinction. That might include a football-only affiliation until everyone gets it all together when we would go in all sports.

I know Western Kentucky joined the Sun-Belt but participated as a D1A Independent before they actually were a Sun Belt member. Maybe we can join the WAC but play football as an independent for a year?

I don't think so. If that's the case, why did he let Campbell back in without bring their football? We've been extremely competitive in just about every sport for the past decade. Liberty is the bee's knees of the Quiz Bowl and debate competitions. There's no way KK kicks out his cash cow. :D

This is actually a great article. I wasn't so shocked by the article as I was the comments. One thing about the article that does excite me is how LU is being mentioned by name. In case you haven't noticed, over the past few weeks, we've gone from being not talked about to being mentioned by name as a future member in the WAC. My favorite thing about the comments are how we're seeing some Nova fans wanting to join the conference. Whether or not they become another potential member, I have no idea. But by there being more interest from Nova, the conference as a whole gains interest. Nova is a huge school with a lot of history, and not just in FCS football. They probably join as football only but still the name brand is huge. Great article.

I totally forgot about Nova. I think they would be a great addition in the WAC east for football only. From what I understand the BE is going to help Nova until they're ready. The perfect scenario for them is being invited to the WAC for football only for 2013 and then transitioning over to the BE in 2015 as an FBS school. By 2015, Navy will be on-board for football and Nova will be a part of the BE's 12/14 member football league.

+1. So many schools are joining and then bolting. I don't mind Nova joining for a couple years and then leaving. It creates interest and at least establishes another team for the required number. What if we picked up Army and Navy too? I'm not sure of the specifics with that but those would be some nice teams.
