Conference shuffling may help Appalachian find new home

But will the new C-USA/Mountain West have an interest in ASU, which seems to have an ally in ECU?

Ballard said that there is a desire for additions to the new C-USA/Mountain West to fit ECU's geographic location, within the new conference's otherwise national membership.

Ballard said that the new conference would "love to consider Appalachian and (UNC) Charlotte down the road in a few years."

C-USA/Mountain West additions could create other opportunities for ASU. For example, the new conference could take existing FBS schools from another conference, such as the Sun Belt, thus creating a need for replacements for that league. Whether ASU would be interested in that isn't certain, and it might depend on the geographic makeup of a restructured league to include natural regional rivals.

FCS programs in the Southeast other than ASU that have announced intentions to move to the FBS and need conference homes are Jacksonville State and Liberty.

Other FCS members from the region that have at least entertained the idea of moving to the FBS include Delaware, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, James Madison, Old Dominion and UNC Charlotte, which is just starting its football program.

Sounds like APP wants in C-USA/Mountain West. But if the C-USA/Mountain West goes with ECU, without APP, then they/APP "might" be interested in the Sun Belt if ............. see article.

Now now...but take a serious look at the Sun Belt. Our facilities across the board are better in most cases, and our athletic budget is already just as big if not bigger than most Sun Belt schools. I agree with the thread in general sports - we're ready to move up, in all sports. Track and field needs some better competition - Tolsma just won his what, 49th Big South coach of the year award? Heck I would be willing to bet even some of the new sports might be ready.
