The helmets that we have are perfectly fine for head injuries. I've even seen 1 or 2 Xeniths out there. Players just don't like wearing them because they feel big on their head. There are a handful of helmets that could be updated but for the most part everything is a newer style that helps with head injuries.

Xeniths aren't very good anyway. The best helmet you can get is the Riddell Revo Speed, which is what everyone one of the white ones are. They are using the blue ones for practice helmets. Also, just went to a trade show in December and the new Rawlings helmet is really good. They have several NFL players wearing their helmet, including Arian Foster and Steven Jackson.

I know that they want to stay away from Schutt but I love the ION 4D. It is probably the most comfortable helmet I've ever worn. I don't really like how they got only the Revo Speeds when they ordered the white ones. Not everyone's head is the same shape and might not fit exactly like it should.

Every player will tell you this. and they are wrong. The design is what the players like and yes it is comfortable. however the Riddell Revo's tested no better than both the Schutt DNA and ION 4-D helmets. The Riddell VSR4 and Zenith was even worse. in fact Zenith pulled out of the testing before it was complete. The New Schutt Helmet is supposed to be a blend between the ION and the Air XP (also a great helmet) we will be testing it out at GSU in the spring.

The most important thing about talking helmets and safety is the fact that NO helmet out there can completely protect from a concussion. The testing over the years for all these helmets has been outdated and the AEMA and NOCSAE have been working each year to improve helmet testing.

Sorry for the equipment guy speech lol

Yes, you're right...the Revolution tested about the same as the DNA and ION, but I'm talking about the Revo Speed. It is the safest, best quality helmet you can buy. It tested out better than any other helmet on the market in the joint VT/WF helmet study. I also would hope nobody was still using the VSR4. The Rawlings helmet wasn't a part of that study because I don't think it was on the market yet, but it is the most comfortable helmet I have ever had on. It has a different material in it that conforms to your head when air is pumped in.

I would like to see the NRG Quantum become more mainstream before I determine how I feel about it. They did a fantastic job marketing it by getting 3 bigger name NFL players but I would still like to see more people in it. Like I said before, I love the ION 4D and I really like the Revo Speed and the Riddell 360.

I would like to see more of the Air Advantages and the Pro Air II phased out of the program.

Hey equipment nerds, what's the deal with all of the helmets coming off this year? I can't remember a football season where somebody's helmet came off seemingly every few plays. Not really at LU but mainly the NFL.

It is a combination of things. The biggest problem is players not having them fitted right. A lot of players wear them loose and don't have enough air and/or have the chin strap tightened fully. Another reason is the skull caps, du-rags, etc. that players wear under the helmet now that get sweaty and the helmet moves around some. Something we had happen where I'm at this year is, we bought some of these gel like chin straps thinking they would be more comfortable for the players. After the player gets sweaty and the sweat gets in the chinstrap, it will slide right off. We used them for one game and immediately switched them out. But the biggest problem is the fit of the helmet to the player
