FISHERSVILLE — Connery Swift likes to strike up a tune — he says it's relaxing. Whether it's gospel music in his church youth choir, or something in the football locker room, Swift just likes to sing.

He also likes to score touchdowns and get good grades.

For his outstanding accomplishments, the Green Hornet senior has been selected as Wilson Memorial's fall nominee for the City/County Student-Athlete of the Year Award, sponsored by Elliott Chevrolet and The News Leader.

"I like to sing, even in church," Swift said. "It makes me feel good praising the Lord.

"I sing all the time," he said. "And maybe a little in the locker room to lighten my teammates up a bit. Singing gives a relaxing feeling. You can let it all out!"

Swift is best known for his accomplishments on the football field. During the regular season, he rushed for 1,270 yards and was second in the Shenandoah District in scoring with 25 touchdowns.

Judging by his numbers he would be similar to SirChauncey sizewise coming in.

Wilson Memorial went all the way to the state semifinals in a very topsy turvy Group A. Only one team in the top 4 in either section made it to the final 4 and they lost to the eventual state champions (from Gretna)

FISHERSVILLE — Connery Swift will take his football talents to the gridiron at the University of Virginia's College at Wise.

The Wilson Memorial senior inked a letter of intent last week after considering the University of Richmond, Liberty University, Randolph-Macon College and Emory & Henry College.

Richmond and Liberty were high on his list, but each had coaching turnovers.

"That kind of changed a lot of things," Swift said. "Both my recruiters and coaching staffs got booted off. That hurt a little bit.

Wouldn't the coach/recruiter going from Liberty to Richmond mean they weren't ruled out? Something's not right with that statement.

It's not academics if he's at UVA-Wise. Something doesn't make sense here.

pretty sure it's the fact that Aldreakis Allen looks like a 2 year starter and they looked up a 3 star stud DJ Abnar...so he'd be riding pine.

But what about the staff that was recruiting him here and went to Richmond? That's the one that doesn't add up in all of this.
