The only reason that Bethune Cookeman made playoffs was because they're from an traditional black conference which is given automatic bids to the conference winner. It's not like Bethune Cookeman is a JMU or anything.

I am fully aware of why they made the playoffs. And they might not be a JMU, but I'm not sure I'd want to be a JMU. This is about the time that JMU starts to disappoint. Just because we can't beat them doesn't mean they're someone to compare against, or want to be.

I'm just saying that winning against NC A&T who beat Bethune Cookeman isn't that great of an accomplishment. Even if NC A&T had beat JMU, it wouldn't be that big of an accomplishment. In addition, JMU might have trouble this time of year and maybe you don't want to be them but they do have something not many schools have, championships. Trying to say that CCU's win against NC A&T is a legit win is like saying that beating Virginia Tech is equal to beating Alabama.

I didn't say it was a legit win. I was saying it got the road win monkey off their back. Building up confidence.

You're missing the point. They don't lose every road game but they are horrible on the road and they've been especially bad in Williams Stadium. I don't care that they got one road win against a team who beat a team that won a crappy conference last year. That's great. They won't win Lynchburg.

Fair enough.

Not everything that happened years ago is just going to repeat itself over and over.

At least we'd better hope not, or we're not going to make the playoffs.

I am looking at this team, this year. I don't think we're good enough to say we can't lose. And I don't think they're bad enough to say they can't win.

Our mistakes and turnovers won't be overcome by CCU losing here 2 years ago. Hillary and the Chants offense passing all over our offense isn't going to go away because we beat them in '07.

I'm worried about this team showing up and playing a solid, disciplined game. History won't save us.

We're fully capable of winning. I'm not sure we will.

Here is my take on it:

Liberty hasnt lost a home conference game since 2006...what that tells me is that there is confidence in that locker room because they know how to win (remember that from Rocco's early years...learning how to win?) and do so convincingly. Also, though turnovers are an issue, Liberty has turned the ball over 3 times or more 4 times...and still won by at least 14 points. Coastal Carolina hasnt won a meaningful road game in five plus seasons (including getting stomped by Richmond and losing to Towson last year. You have to think that weighs on the minds of the CCU players. Some of these guys have never won in Lynchburg, and for some this is their first trip to the mountain. CDB knows that this isnt an easy place to come to...and remember he has only won once in Lynchburg and it took triple overtime to do it. Even a wounded dog still has some bite.

Coastal Is better then we thought th would be. We aren't as good as we thought we would be. Because of that this game is a toss up. There I just settled this increasingly getting old debate by bj "kool aid drinker" williams and tt "I think I am the only realist on flamefans" l. Your welcome :D

I used a lot of factors in making my pick ... the home dominance was one. Coastal's road struggles against legit opponents was another. The more I thought about it, I came to the conclusion that Stony Brook '10 was the best conference opponent to play at LU, and I think that SBU team is better than this Coastal team. I could see this game going a lot like the SBU game went. Tight for 2 1/2 quarters and a couple of late scores by the home team.

So the question is, Lang, is this LU team as good/better than the '10 LU team? That's why I'm skeptical of these trends. I think the '09 and '10 teams were better than this one. So that history means less to me.

If you just went by straight numbers, its tough to say for sure (because there is still football to be played) but probably this year is slightly worse than the previous years...now that being said, the 09 team wasnt expected to do a lot (you had a freshman running back, a SEC transfer who I think sustained a couple concussions and lost out to a guy who isnt even on the team anymore, a guy who could play anywhere on the field but had never taken a college snap before and a WR who hadnt played all that much his first year on the mountain) after losing a ton of all-conference talent. We all know what happened...that freshman running back was Aldreakis Allen and he led the team in rushing and tied for the team lead in TDs, Tommy Beecher threw for 1700 yards and 9 TDs (and 5 INT), Mike Brown compiled 1623 yards of offense by himself, Chris Summers finished with just over 600 yards and Liberty went through one of the craziest 6 game offensive runs in school history, scoring 50 points in 4 of 5 games and gutting out a 20-13 win in Charleston before the heartbreaking shootout loss to SBU on Long Island. 2010 was pretty much the Mike Brown Show. Of our 5059 total offensive yards last year, he had over 76 percent of them. Through 6 games this year, Mike has 69 percent of our offensive yards. When that much of your offense goes through one person, that can give the perception that the rest of the team isnt that good as well.

I am with you TTL so don't take my post out of context. This LU team has not performed as well as those teams you just mentioned yet this season but the team has more talent this year then any of those years in my opinion which is why the start has been so disappointing for me. If they ever play as well as they are capable of playing Lang's prediction seems fair to me.

But as you have said over and over again they are not playing up to their potential and have lacked discipline which is why this game will be close. I give LU the edge only because we are at home, but it will be interesting...

This is weird to say, but I think this team is better, or will be better at the end as it evolves ... the three losses were on mistakes, not talent. Seven turnovers at N.C. State, in the game for 3 1/2 quarters; fumble while driving for a go-ahead score at Lehigh (no guarantee they would have gotten a stop after, however); red zone INT and awful penalties against JMU.

Those things are starting to get cleaned up. Granted the competition is much less stiff, but it's an encouraging trend. Though you bring up a strong point ... if LU reverts to the silly mistakes/bad penalties that it had in September, the Flames will be in some trouble tomorrow.

And Lang again proves to be the balancing voice of reason between the extremes that are TTL and myself. Im just glad that games are decided on the field and not on the message boards or on the computers...
