I will wait for BJ's take before making an opinion. I think that is the unwritten Flamefans.com law

We must wait for BJ's spin on things before even thinking about being negative so I will wait for that

Fortunately that CAN happen this year. Everybody in the Big South stinks. We just need more Dawgs!

Don't be deceived by SBU, they ALWAYS do this.

And CCU beat Furman, hard to say they stink.

We don't have to run through...just survive and gets breaks. We seem to never get a break. We're DUE.

Do you realize how wierd last year was. If Gardner Webb beats Coastal in overtime (or was it the 4th quarter), then LU's loss to Coastal wouldn't have mattered.

It's strange that we could have beaten Stoney Brook and Stoney Brook could have still went to the playoffs...but because we beat them so badly, Coastal goes.

The conference uses the defensive points thing so people won't run up the score...but I think at this point, you have to try and run up the score on everybody in conference anyway, because you don't know what will happen if you loose one and there's a 3 way tie. Does that make sense...even though it's points allowed...you might as well leave your first team defense in as well. This is a terrible tie-breaker system, and I'm saying it now before the conference season begins.

But we don't have to crush teams...we just need to finish 6-0 in conference or 5-1 and lose to the right team by the right number of points. We could actually go 7-4 on the season and make the playoffs.

This was never possible 3 years ago before the auto-bid. I think this team is capable of going 5-1. It seems like the way we are playing that we will find a way to lose a game...but we're do a break...someone else is going to lose, too...this time we'll get the tiebreaker...the odds are with us!

The ultimate would be to make the playoffs at 8-3 or 7-4 and get a remach against JMU or Lehigh.

I apprechiate the gullible, "someday we might win" thinking, but name me one big game we've won?

Elon? Yeah they absolutely choked. Ball State? Yeah that was an easy win that we nearly coughed up.

Got anymore laughs for me?

And by the way... the "we're due" comment. Totally illogical. Every game is not blind random chance. It's football. It's not spinning the wheel. You play football. You spin the wheel hoping somehow it lands on your number.

As far as the playoffs being watered down. Someone correct me if I'm wrong...but the first year of the Big South auto bid there were still only 16 teams that made it...it was the second year it was watered down to 24, correct? The Big South autobid existed 1 year before the playoffs were watered down.

The playoffs were watered down so that even with the autobids, good teams could get at-large births. That's not the fault of the Big South.

Furthermore, the Southern Conference took Elon simply to delay the Big South from getting a bid into the playoffs earlier.

As far as the we're due comment being illogical. What I'm refering to is games that Liberty is not even involved in going our way...if Garder Webb would have held on at Coastal last year...Liberty would have went to the playoffs...

I really think that this year even if we slip and lose one game in the Big South, the cards are going to fall are way with how the other teams play each other. That has nothing to do with how our coaches and players perform...it's about how the other teams perform against each other. I could see something like us losing to Gardner Webb in Boiling Springs, but then Gardner Webb losing to Coastal and Stoney Brook, but we'd take care of the rest and get in. I just think the odds are we're going to get a break this year.

It was 20 last year. That was the only year we've had the autobid.

As for the whole odds thing, I'm pulling my hair out so I'll just let it go this time.

OK...so the year before was the year that we were supposed to have the semi auto bid if we met the certain criteria which according to our conference commissioner which Liberty met, but then it didn't apply to us...

If 2009 is what you're referencing, no, we had to get in as an at-large bid, regardless of how we did in Big South play. Many thought we would make it in that year, but we lost to Stony in the final week of that season. Stony did not go to the playoffs either, even though they won head to head. They were not even eligible as they only had 6 wins.

Jim

I believe what jbock is saying is that great teams pave their own way, and having to rely on chance or luck from a other team is a weak argument at best. Mediocrity relies on "chance," or getting a "break" as you say, while excellence makes it's own way.

Am I correct jbock?

If it's not jbocks point (and I think it is) then it's my point.

This is our "best team" (Rocco's words) under Rocco. NO EXCUSES!

Yeah. Although to be honest I feel like I'm having 5 arguments at one time here. This topic has gone all over the place.

But yeah, you're right, great teams pave their way. Nothing matters as long as we win.

I think where everyone got confused was this "odds" thing that I'm trying to debunk.

Wiinig the Big South this year will be a pyretic victory. It will be like kissing your sister. It would be like watching your new car being driven off a cliff...by your mother in law. Like winning the lotto AFTER the 100 million prize.like winning second place in a beauty contest. Like the color beige.

IMO, the clock started on Rocco last year when the automatic bid was awarded. We would have had the go undefeated or have one loss in those seasons prior the auto bid to have a shot. Yes we have not won the credibility games in the past and this year, and im not into moral victories because we played each team close, and each game we had golden opportunities to win those games however, we win the conference, we get in the playoffs and that is what matters anyway. This team is certainly capable of making a run in the playoffs.
