None of my view of this situation is based on what posters here have said. It is, after all, the internet. That includes those who know many facts from an "inside source."

The objective, known facts are this: Chapman was arrested and charged with felony possession of cocaine (as an "outsider" and a lawyer I'm not as concerned with the misdemeanor), he was suspended for 3 games in which the team went 1-2 and is reinstated in time for him to be in a Top 25 game and the Big South slate, the felony charges are still pending.

My conclusion, as I stated before, is that being charged with a felony is not serious enough to take away the privilege of playing football. I'll say again: I admire Rocco and the mission of Liberty and there may be some extenuating circumstances that change my opinion; but right now, with what is ACTUALLY known, this stinks. To me, it shows a lack of respect for the police department and CA's office of Lynchburg, who (on the outside) still feel the felony charges are warranted.

In that same regard, as a lawyer I have to wonder how this might affect Chapman's sentencing. I certainly don't do a lot of criminal work so I'm going to assume his lawyer put that into his analysis.

I have to admit the whole mess of the past few days makes me sick to my stomach. Saying any more than that is pointless at this juncture. I'm hoping most everyone has felt like venting served some purpose.

While there have obviously been some of our posters who have taken a level of glee in the midst of this discussion, I think everyone for the most part is so passionate about this issue because we all love our school. Its reputation internally & externally have weathered decades of challenges and I am sure it will continue on long after this situation is long forgotten. But I think many of us feel like the air was let out of our balloon by what we see. It is true that we aren't privy to all of the details, but that should be taken into account by all parties including the school.

Frankly I am ready to move on and much like the thread about the coach sitting just below this one right now, I would love nothing more than to never see them add a post ever again. But I know better.

I also would like to point out that this thread has gotten far more personal in nature between posters than I feel comfortable allowing. Let's try to keep the focus on the decision & its impact and not on each other.

Just my. 02, with LU's strong faith-based structure and history, it is a shock to me that the kid is even on your campus, much less representing your institution on an athletic field. It's not solely an athletics issue, it is a direct 180 degree turn away from the standards that the school was founded and built upon.

In which case, that's what they should say. I think how the PR is being handled is probably the worst I've seen in a long time. Which is really the disappointing part.

I respect them for sticking their necks out to help the kid out. I just hope it's for the right reasons. If it's not for the right reasons, then I will make my voice loud and clear in opposition.

No problem. Not living in a glass house throwing stones either...G-W has had its' share of problems over the past decade or so, I know how it feels as an alumnus when you see boneheaded decisions being made at your alma mater and you wonder privately and aloud just what in the heck is really going on behind the scenes. I still get the occasional question when I am out of the area and someone knows I am a G-W grad such as "isn't that where the President changed grades of a player", etc., and it is ten years after the fact.

Athletics get you great exposure for your school without a doubt, but the exposure works both ways, and negative exposure takes a long time to recover from, especially when your school is supposed to have a higher faith-based standard on which it was built, even in G-W's case to a lesser extent than LU.

It's ludicrous to think that people who are against Asa being on the team right now are being judgmental. It's also ridiculous that someone would not read the board because of this discussion. and as Super said a few pages ago this is not the kind of grace i believe the bible teaches. One must be accountable for their actions. This makes me like Aldreakis a lot more, he took his punishment worked himself back in the good graces and is now back on the team thriving. I am all for providing structure keeping Asa in school and assisting him but you simply CANNOT allow him on the team with a felony charge pending, it's unprecedented. I'm still just sick to my stomach over this whole situation and how it's been handled and how much damage this could lead to.

It's only been postponed once. It's actually pretty standard to postpone the original hearing so the defense attorney can gather more information for a case.

This is a decision based on winning football games. Any reference to scripture is a cute manipulation of grace. If you want to support Asa that is fine, I applaud an attempt to "reform" his core convictions. But your walk still talks more that your talk walks. Decisions have consequences and this one really is simple. He has disqualified himself from representing Liberty University as a student/athlete for the 2011 season. We are innocent until proven guilty that is why he is not incarcerated. The coach and AD have put the Chancellor, University, Alumni and supporters in an awful position of trying to defend, justify and live out this decision.

And for those you try to make posters feel bad for expressing outrage...where are your convictions? This is a felony against the laws of our nation! This is a pitiful example to our community! This is way bigger than a trip to Bethlehem, PA to compete against a reputable institution of higher learning.

Finally, a few questions I heard today.
If there is nothing there, why push the court date BACK instead of UP and get this resolved?
Would someone from the Quiz Bowl team be allowed back on the team if the same thing happened to them? Or would they have "Red Shirt" or it's equivalent ?
Since he has a history of FTA, what is to stop him from leaving LU after the season to go prep for the NFL combine thus accumulating another FTA?
The NCAA couldn't give two farts about this situation.
