I am so disappointed with Asa because he made a stupid decision that could affect his life for a long time and because he was a team captain. He was a poster child for the school supplies drive. He knew he was a voice on this team. I will wait for the justice system to take its course, but i feel like his career at LU is over. Asa has made some mistakes before and i really thought he had moved past it. I do agree we all need to be praying for him and leave the football talk behind as he has much larger issues on his plate now. Does this surprise me? no, because atlhletes getting in trouble at LU happens every year, but this one is obviously a higher profile case. To the poster who said why didnt the other players catch this? Asa is his own man and if any player did know they should have confronted him but we will never know. As far as the coaching staff not knowing, i agree with Haize they are always the last to know. I just hope that Asa can grow from this. i could care less about football for him right now.

It is easy to hide things from coaches but impossible to hide them from other teammates. There were players on the team that knew what was going on and it is unfortunate they were not there to intervene in a positive way on his behalf.HMO makes a (shockingly) salient point. Satan is ALL over this guy right now. He has won this battle in Asa's life and he is pushing to win the war. Let's pray he can find the way to overcome this and realize he has a lot of QUALITY life worth living left
I disagree here. There are countless stories of people who are doing things that nobody family, friends, teammates know about. Those stories where people say, "I would have never thought he/she would have done that." So to put any blame on teammates IMO is unfounded and uncalled for. Now, if teammates did know then yes shame on them but we don't know the truth.

This one is on the rest of the team. You cannot tell me that not one person knew this was happening, and no one said anything. Didn't want to get their friend in trouble. This could have been handled "in house" with much lesser penalties. Now it is a public embarrassment and Asa is in even more trouble.

What is that quote about fearing the indifference of good men more than evil men?

I cannot believe the team voted him capitain with this knowledge.

If one or two players knew, they could have approached Asa. But I would not expect them to go to the coaching staff. They do not want to be known as the dude that potentially wrecked the season for getting Asa Suspended. (it would have been his entire senior season)

And what would be the motivation of a few players to rat out a guy and get him suspended for his senior year? If he were a junior and still had time to come back and make it right, It might be a little easier.

Dont put this on other players on the team. That is throwing too many people under the bus for one dude's bad choices. And I agree with SJ. Asa did what Asa wanted.

You know the one person who wasn't gotten any blame for this and deserves it? Some idiot on FF who posted a question asking which player can't we afford to lose  It's like they were asking for this to happen.

Didn't this happen last week? They voted him captain before this happened. I know this really stinks but I gotta believe this will motivate the rest of the team.

I was unlcear.

There were comments that it was the team's fault because they knew about Asa's issue. I was saying there is NO way they voted him capitain knowing of these issues.

spoke with SJ last nite; very sorry to hear about this...

reading LANG's piece and noted this:
LANG wrote:Chapman will also have to answer for unpaid traffic violations at his Sept. 12 court date. On Oct. 5, 2010, he was pulled over by Virginia State Police and charged with not wearing a seat belt and either driving with a light out or excessive lights. Court records show he was also charged with driving on a suspended license, which is a misdemeanor. He was convicted of all three charges in November, but records are unclear as to whether he made his court appearance. They do show he never paid nearly $300 in fines and court fees.

Around the same time as his November court date, a judge issued an order for Chapman to come to court to show why he shouldn’t be held in contempt. When he didn’t show up for that date, the judge issued a capias order for Chapman to be arrested for contempt.

“There was an outstanding capias,” Lynchburg Police Capt. Ryan Zuidema said. “But, it was a traffic stop that led to the (drug) charges.”
So he gets popped for a minor violation, then they find him driving suspended. That's a problem. Then he blows off court. Then he blows off the summons for failure to appear. Now there's a warrant out on him. Then he gets popped for another traffic violation. Now they find coke and weed. And discover the warrant.

yeah... Asa has some issues to address here and though I do feel very sorry for his missed opportunity- I really hope someone steps in and mentors the guy. I obviously don't know him but he seems to think the rules don't apply to him. Not good. Hope he has a strong family.

PS: you wouldnt believe the amount of times we make stops for equipment violations and discover suspensions, warrants, drugs, drunks or both/all the above.

I agree Rooster...either we are on the cusp of greatness or doomed to another 1-10 season in the minds of some people on here

Wish the young man a fresh start in life. But he does not deserve another chance to wear the football uniform of LU.

this board is has very few people that understand:
that it takes time to build program,
that injuries and boneheaded moves happen and we will live,
This program is on the way up at a reasonable pace,
the athletic department and the coaches are way better than anything we've had before,
the sky is blue because God made it blue.

I put first at Asa's feet. BUT there were people on the team that knew what was going on, believe it. This is not something they have to take to the coaches but handle themselves, but they didn't that is on the team. The deeper question is why didn't they? Are there more players doing the same thing? Does the program not build a culture of accountability ? I don't know the answers to those questions and can only speculate. I just hope Asa can finally learn and be a better person for the experience.
