It's been all over Facebook and the local news that Lynchburg is in the running for a free Dog Park, and today is the LAST day to vote. Even if you're not from Lynchburg, you can still vote:

Not without a leash. My understanding is that dog parks are leash-free zones. I heard that Lynchburg and Huntington, WV are running neck-in-neck for the top 2 spots for one dog park that will be funded by Pet Smart.

Practically every neighborhood has bark parks here in Houston. They are essentially fenced in fields with a few park benches that generally have a place for the dogs to get water and run (and the necessary bags for keeping the place clean). My dogs go nuts as soon as they see we are going to one. They love socializing with other dogs. We have yet to have a problem with other dogs. The expense to add one to an existing park is minimal. I'm surprised that there isn't one already in Lynchburg at someplace like Peaksview.

We'll know by 5:00 tomorrow (Aug. 5) which one of the 15 finalist cities won a dog park from Pet Smart. The voting is now closed.

This whole dog park thing sums up the mentality of our city quite well. We will spend the time and resources to promote this contest city wide, and make a video about the contest for only a CHANCE to win. Meanwhile if you spent the same amount of effort and resources and simply do it yourself we'd already have one by now....seriously. Unreal...let's just throw another couple of million to a traffic circle in a bad part of town. I give up on them.

While we're on parks in the city, peaks view park needs to be demolished and completely redesigned. Such an ignorant layout. Its also pathetic that the Little League kids are playing on the same two fields they had back in 40's (maybe 50's). Our Lynchburg City Parks and Rec is a joke though. Just ask yourself what exactly the city is doing in regards to parks and outdoor activities. We do have Blackwater Creek trail but they have to do a better job doing things for the kids around here. Our city lacks so much vision its sad.

EDIT: This appears to not even be headed up by the city but a local group, even though there were city rep's in the videos and other events. I would be to embarrassed if I was a rep of the city to show up at this knowing I've done nothing productive to do this ourselves but rather rely on a local group and a contest. On the website it says they hope to open in the Fall of '11 depending on the fundraising efforts. REALLY? Fundraising efforts for a dog park???? Its time to step up for once in your lives Lynchburg City Rep's

Based on what Sly and HMO said, I'm wondering how much it would cost for LU to build a dog park?

We certainly have the land, and it would be a great way to reach out to the dog-loving Lynchburg community (and LOTS of faculty, staff, off campus students, and TRBC members have dogs).

Seriously, dog parks are basically an open area. Not even maintained. The dogs kill off all the grass. So basically it's a piece of land with a dog water fountain and little plastic baggies. Maybe a pond. Not hard to do and it's good for dogs. But hey, this most recent park they opened is what like 20 years in the making? And it's not even done.

At some point though LU can no longer be responsible for picking up the slack because of their incompetence. Not only are we picking up the slack but we're paying them for us to pick up their slack. LU is getting approached by people around town for all kinds of things like a youth sports complex because they have completely given up on the city and know LU are the only ones around getting things done and casting a vision and actually seeing it through.

I fully understand where some of the bitterness and despise stems from with some of the people that have fighting these battles for years...in fact they have much more tolerance than I have. I respect Chancellor for even being willing to sit in the same room...not sure I would be able to.

I just turned a thread about dog parks into whatever it is I just did/said. LOL...guess this is what happens when I take a few months off FF and come back to a thread about our city.

They keep saying on the radio that it'll cost at least $40-50k for the fence, and they also need water/plumbing and then maintenance.

Wait so a park that is full of dogs is the main source for the spread of canine deases? Wow! Next thing you will say is schools are the main place kids get the germs that cause them to get sick.

Your vet friends are really dropping some bombshells.

Well it is pretty obvious. Doesn't mean we shouldn't have dog parks.

peaks view to this day are some of the worst fields i've ever played on. i've played all over the midwest and still haven't happened upon fields that rival those terrible fields. i see that hasn't changed.

It didn't upet me at all. I just thought it was a terrible arguement against dog parks.

Kids need to go to school. You and I need to go to work. Dogs don't need to go to a dog park. That's the difference.
+1. From a wildlife standpoint, one big reason feeding deer is discouraged is because diseases are spread rapidly through the herd when "well-meaning" individuals feed the poor starving animals.

Just heard tonight that Botetourt announced another 4plex facility right beside their current complex...that gives Roanoke and surrounding counties 3 multi-million dollar parks...I'm not bitter
