LU polling place takes City Council center stage.

The prospect of creating a new voting precinct around Liberty University took center stage Tuesday when Lynchburg City Council gathered to discuss the local redistricting proposals.
The LU precinct, which is one of four changes recommended by city staff and election officials, drew by far the most interest from council. In response to questions from council, officials said that student addresses would be verified, that there was precedent in Virginia for establishing a polling place on a college campus and that the change would not affect LU’s nonprofit status.
Mayor Joan Foster, who asked several of the questions, said she wanted to dispel myths that were circulating in the community.
“I’ve tried to cover all the issues that citizens are thinking of,” she said. “… I think some of these things just need to be clarified so citizens may not have that type of thinking.”
Election officials stressed that the new precinct was recommended to help ease congestion at Heritage Elementary School, where LU students currently vote, and not to help or hinder any political faction
