Am I reading this correctly?? WOW .... The Iowa wrestling program brings in THREE TIMES the revenue of all of the women sorts COMBINED!?
Do you see what can happen when it's marketed properly? Virginia Tech is doing the same thing (coach Dresser is a master marketer).
Dan, it's a good stretch, but Lynchburg Virginia is not Iowa. Iowa has a tradition of wrestling. Most people in Lynchburg could care less about wrestling. I'm sorry if that's not what you want hear.
Jbock and BJ WIlliams --- thank you --appreciate the lesson on the differences between Va and Iowa with regard to wrestling. Gee, I didn't know that.
Seriously --- I do know a thing or two about wresling & its popularity. Just so that you know, the hot-bed for wrestling is Pa. --- Iowa runs a distant 2nd, with Ohio, NY, and NJ hot on Iowa's heels. Additionally --- you mentioned places in Va where the sport is somewhat "hot" (Great Bridge and Grundy) --- no offense, but that is VERY dated. Christiansburg area is the latest hot-bed (for the past 8 years) and Great Bridge was taken out and replaced by Colonial Forge HS (in Stafford, Va --- where I helped coach a few years ago). C-Forge went on to win three straight AAA state titles and a national ranking as high as 9th (out of, what, nearly 22,000 high schools in the country?). Not bad ... I was looking forward to bringing that same model to Lib U.
The Virginia Tech wrestling program is actually making so much money they have brought in 2 extra asst. coaches (paid out of fundraising / revenue the programs brings in). The Hokie Open alone brings in a five figure sum to their program. Due to its incredible popularity in Jr. league and high school level, wrestling can be very, very profitable if it is marketed correctly.
Wow ---- IU's wrestling team brings in 3 TIMES what all of the lady programs make COMBINED!
