I am sure the JB :koolaid drinkers with rush to his defense. I will still be here for years to come watching Jerry Jr continue to spend our way into mediocrity until he gets tired of funding a fake tan.
Maybe he should transfer to Tech?
That would be a GREAT day for the Flames!

The only JB who had had anything to do with this game was John Brown (he hasn't the reason we lost). We get it you don't like Barber now go away since you have nothing else to say. You remind me everytime you post why I don't associate with hokies

Schfourteenteen 4 AD!!!!

When people say "we are as good as Evan is tonight," there is no way you can expect to make it deep in these tournaments. It speaks not only to Evan's inconsistency, but also to the inability for anyone else to take over the game. Nick Barbour didn't win tonight's game.

Evan does not have the ability to be our go-to guy right now. A team's leading scorer should not shoot 39% from the floor. Larry Blair shot better and he had 0 help. Evan's a good player who isn't ready for that role yet. He's also not ready for 38 minutes of it.

IMO Layer mismanaged the game. We should have paced our starters so they would have legs at the end of the game. We needed to use our post game more - Burris, JVP and Sommy went a combined 8-9. I ran a concession stand at an Upward event, so I know basketball.

Count me as one who isn't shocked by this result, but expects us to be a more polished team next year.

Its 2 am and I'm still festering. Yes I was one who defended our AD yes I was one who got seriously upset when people questioned our coaching and leadership. but now. now I'm starting to convert. I'm starting to go over to the "dark side". Our leadership has yet to bring me anything of substance as an alumni. I see your budget but what has it brought? choking in big games. How does that make me want to contribute as an alumni? I'm sick and tired of being optimistic and seeing my alma mater embarrass me in big games. In the 4 major sports I follow (baseball, basketball, football and soccer) We have yet to make an NCAA appearance since I was a freshman. That was 6 years ago. Thank you women's basketball, soccer and All track and Field for making a splash. maybe I should follow you all more closely but this display by the "big sports" is garbage and I'm sick of defending it. We haven't won a big game in any recent memory. it is about time we start doing it. If its christian it ought to be better. NOT MEDIOCRE *end rant.

vtechhokies20 wrote:"The loss will not define us" Dale Layer. Let the spin begin. COY, POY, 2 2nd teamers playing worst road team in BSC, best player saddled with fouls. #1 seed in disaray. Seriously down year in BSC. Fort Knox budget.
What do you have against Layer?
#341978
Layer said all along that we won a few more games than we should have. He wasn't ever saying we were the best team in the league. We had a nice run, surprised some folks and we have a nasty taste in our mouth to get rid of for next season. This is only layers 2nd season. We should've won tonight but we obviously have offensive issues.

Who cares about a budget when you can't pay players to play for you? This is not JB or Layer's fault. Like Layer said in his interview monday after he won COY... "I never took a shot this season." The bottom line is that our guys didn't get the job done. The banter about JB and Layer is lame and you sound like a bunch of ten year olds who want their ball back so you can go home and cry.

I am still upset over the choke last night in chokeburg. Layer said it is was not because we did not play hard, we played a good game. Sorry Coach, NOT!

Thank you. I 100% agree. this isn't layer or JB's fault.

I have always thought this year was just a confidence builder for next year. I think we saw a group with a lot of heart early in the season that lost it mentally in the last part. Our talent is just not there yet. Recruiting will be the key. Development of JVP and Sommy in the offseason will be vital to our moving forward as a team next year. Yes we need more consistency and maturity from our SOPH 2 guard but I think that will happen. Getting Baird, Smith, and possibly Geilo (sp?) will make this team look a lot different next year imo... I am not convinced we don't need to see some more moves this season like last. There are several guys who played big minutes this year that I could see not on the floor much if at all next year.

We learned a lot this year and I think Coach Layer did a great job with what he had. Not sure who is a fault for the late season metal break downs but I think there is enough blame to go around. In some ways I am greatful for the late season swoon. If we had somehow won the tourney folks would have glossed over our weak spots. No chance of that now. We will be better for it.

one look last night i really liked that i wished we would've used more was when we had Evan at the 1, david or JC at the 2 and jesse at the 3. Jesse would flash to the high post area and if he got the ball good things happend the 3-4 times we ran the set. Key was they needed to have a shooter out on the wing they tried to do it with JB on the wing and it didn't work. After that I don't think they gave that look again all night exept for when even made a sloppy entry pass for a layup.

The question I would pose is this... was our friend Realist right when they said we played all the right teams at exactly the right time? (minus all the Winthrop is great crap). We got lucky? Or were we really this good, and have just lost it at the end?

Frankly I'm not sure and I'd like to know what others think.
#341987
I still don't think folks need to throw Evan, David, Coach Layer, or anyone else under the bus. This is the case of a team that is still rebuilding from a big drop off. The depth is not where it should be yet, and people just absolutely wore down. Do we need more scorers, YES? But if you are just now figuring that out, where have you been?

This team had a terrific year that brought tourney expectations way up. I had in the back of my mind my expectations from before the year began and used that to temper my expectations for the tourney. Am I disappointed, very much so. Am I shocked, not really. Do I now have much higher expectations for next season, yes.

This is a very good team with some very good players that need a couple more to help out with depth and scoring. Life goes on.

At this level of Division 1 basketball the only thing that matters is the conference tournament. You play the entire regular season to put yourself in the absolute best possible position you can (in terms of seeding and home court advantage) for the conference tournament.

I have been a fan since my freshman year - 9 full seasons of bball. In those 9 years we have lost in the first round of the conference tourney 5 times. We've only made 1 championship game in 9 years. We have lost 4 times ON OUR HOME COURT to a team seeded lower than us.

You know what teams in this conference we're most similar to?
  • Charleston freakin Southern and Radford
Everybody else has done more in the tourney than us. Coastal, UNC Asheville, VMI, High Point, and (obviously) Winthrop.

That's pathetic.

Agreed Rooster. Some of the comments regarding Evan, Layer, and Barber are stupid.

Yes, once upon a time I would get really worked up about a loss- and I did cuss a few times after the game last night, but some of this emoting is way overboard. Life does go on and there will be next season. Losses are disappointing, but they happen.
#341997
It isn't anyones fault. There were no expectations for this team at the beginning of the season. Layer is really proving he can coach. JB has nothing to do with this discussion.

Let's just hope we don't have 2-3 impact players transfer out. If we can hold on to everyone for next year, I'd be surprised if we didn't surpass 25 wins.
#341998
ok....first of all most on this board had expectations of finishing in the top four. we did that. we got on a roll and some expectations went through the roof...that should not have happened. this team never won pretty or lost pretty for that matter. we all knew this team could play bad on any given night and unfortunately we peaked too soon. we overachieved all year. we were not the most talented team but played very hard and did so all season. we simply got cold at the wrong time. Layer deserved coach of the year based on his body of work all season. for people like jenkins who say "this is a black eye on the basketball program and makes it hard to be a fan", i would suggest you move on, and the same for vthokie. we do not need fans who are gonna jump off a bridge because we lost or fans who blame the AD for our losses. this is layer's second year for gosh sake! yes i am very disappointed we lost, because if we had played last night like we did mid season we had a chance to win the tournament this year, but from the beginning i feel most everyone thought a top four finish was all we could expect. i know this is a message board and everyone is entitled to their opinion, but i wish that sometimes some would take a breather and relax before spouting off stuff that is just pure insanity, and the sarcasm....i guess im just too old, but to me sarcasm is just child's play. i think we have lofty expectations as Liberty fans, and at least for this team those expectations should have never been so high this year.

in regards to the game, not enough movement without the ball, the inability to knock down open shots, and the inability to check shay shine. we had no one who could contain him. it was a disappointing way to end the season, but we will be back next year, and hopefully better.

I don't normally weigh in on this stuff, but remember - as po'd as you guys are (we all are) the kids feel worse. And I'm sure HCDL does too.

Keep supporting the program (and all the programs). Life goes on. It wasnt that long ago we were flipping out that Dees transferred.

I'm more worried that the guys havent shown up to pick up my old refrigerators for recycling. Life goes on.

Now back to the group freakout

EDIT: SMOOTHIE beat me to it. My man.
