However, I found it interesting that Sanders got some bump/touch calls in the lane that Dickey did not on drives with Flames players hacking- not blaming it on that whatsoever as I felt the calls were pretty even (refs were inconsistent for both teams) all things considered outside of those differences- so if this thread talks about any calls I would go there waaayyyy before the last play which was the right call as the shot was definitely up..

A great game- UNCA played poorly much of the first half & that was the difference- poor decisions by our ball handlers in the overtime and forcing shots/bad passing allowed LU this win.. 5 on 2 break for UNCA leads to no points & a run out layup for LU- that 4 point swing alone & the 'Dogs win this one.. Good game FlameFans- enjoy!
Good summary. I don't totally agree with you about the bump/touch calls (but I think you could easily pick out a few each way, so I can see where you are coming from). You guys are tough and not a team to mess with in the tournament for sure!

Yes- John Williams- I've been talking about him for 4 years about his bunnies (note SCAR has been giving him props for awhile now as well!)

That dunk in the first half was one of the nastiest I've ever seen. Sommy is going to be on highlight packages for years.

I was driving in from visiting a friend and I heard the call on that dunk and I was like "ooh...toasty!"

Seriously? Both sides complaining about the officiating? What was the foul shooting comparison? Please, the officiating had no adverse impact on either team.

TTL - Have you ever thrown the type of pass that was attempted at the end of the game? Would you rather he over throw it and have it land out of bounds? That is not an easy pass especaily when you are not taller then the person you are trying to throw it over. At least by throwing it short the were some hands on it and he still had a chance to get a shot off. I personally would have let them go w/out a TO, but that is just me.

The closing shots on TV showed three nasty dunks. I'll be watching for the news and hope to see at least one of them again! I wonder what Williams vertical is? Quite the combo in the second half- that big guy blocking a few and owning the boards and Williams waiting for a backdoor to open up. I heard Coach Layer speak today; he reminded us how vulnerable a team is when they are winning. Gut check tonight and great game by LU and UNCA.

I really thought we were going to get derailed there as Liberty could not stop UNCA's momentum in the second half. Fortunately Liberty made just enough big plays to grind out a win. If we face these guys again in the postseason we will need to figure something out on DJ Cunningham. Hopefully this game will just add to the Flames confidence in pulling out close games.

The Vines Center was absolutely electric tonight...I mean if you had a meter registering the sound level it would have been probably well into the 100s. I haven't seen an atmosphere like that since maybe 2004.

I just said hoped for better execution. I didn't say I expected anything.

That's the kind of play that gets the team noticed. William's dunk would have been number 5 on top plays, and they'd say "more from this game later" and that would have been top 2.

It was ran perfectly on the court, the pass just wasn't perfect. That's all. It happens. I'm not upset, it's either you call that, or a somewhat contested jumper, and either way you're going to have a tough time, even with 2.4 left.

JW has a 42" vertical- there's lots of YouTube stuff out there from Midnight Madness stuff over the past 3 years.. One of 3 players in conference history to record 1000+ point, 600+ rebounds, and block 200+ shots (LU's Peter Aluma being one of the other 2)- & the guy is 6'3"- while he is not the most polished basketball player, he's the best athlete I've ever seen.

Amazingly competitive (and intense) game, but I'm excited we got the W. I second BJ, the crowd was outstanding, particularly the student side. We still have work to do with the Flames Club section (maybe we need to install some oxygen on that side of the Vines for the "older" folks). Considering that we pulled this game out, will their be an attendance increase for Saturday's game? Any thoughts?

While Cunningham was doing his Art Parakhauski imitation in the second half, I couldn't help but wonder how Carter got himself so deep in Layer's doghouse that he didn't get a sniff of the floor.

Im not one to be negative... :D

Was beating UNC ASHEVILLE really worthy of rushing the court? Not UNC. Not a ranked team. Not even a reigning conference champ. UNC ASHEVILLE. Don't take this as a knock UNCA - I just don't see how beating you guys is THAT special. I certainly wouldn't expect you to rush the ski lodge basement after a win against us. I know we've had discussions about this before....

I'm not sure, but we were "up" and yelling most of the game, unlike most of the others on the "old" side. The student side was awesome and fun to watch. My wife wants to move seats for next year! She feels that way about football too, but I digress, sort of....

I would say it's how we won. But still I agree with you. But you know the LU student body... once one student does it, everybody does it...

But all I have to say is wow. This team has come such a long way from a near disaster vs. Virginia Intermont.

I'm just glad they were sooo into the game. I was impressed with the crowd and the noise tonight. They can rush if they want to. What was silly was Joel getting in with them after the shot went in and jumping around. Dale went and fished him out.

I not sure it was just the fact we beat them it was how we did it. When it looked like we were going to blow it someone would hit a key shot to put us back in it (Evan Gordon's 3, David Manaya's 3). It might have been an overreation but it was an excuse for the fans to get excited about a big win. I think UNC Asheville has a good team. Very impressed with Cunningham, Dickey, and Williams. I am surprised that they don't have a better record but have played some good competition OOC.

i guess they could have stormed the court since it was Layer's 300

that would make much more sense then for beating UNCA

Yeah, Chris Stephenson, from Charlotte High (my alma mater).

In basketball camp in Middle School, he was in like 4th grade, and was on the same team as me in the 3 on 3 tournament we ran. He was really good then, too. His whole family was full of athletes, a couple just didn't try that hard and never panned out. Glad to see he's doing well enough to get run at the DI level.

One of the best atmosphere's I've ever been at in the Vines. VMI game was good but this was great. Becky Falwell just posted on Facebook "The Furnace is back". For those of you that were here during its heyday, is our crowd getting back to where it should be?
