NewsAdvance.com wrote:Vintage air show idea may fly with county support
Campbell also agrees to pay for easements on Royal property

A group that wants to bring a vintage aircraft show to the Lynchburg Regional Airport next year won support from Campbell County supervisors Monday.

The Lynchburg Regional Air Show committee wants to hold an air show for propeller-driven planes April 16, which would serve as a “dry run” for a larger jet air show in 2012, said John Barksdale, chairman of the Brookneal/Campbell County Airport Authority and executive director of the Lynchburg Regional Air Show.

Dave Young, a member of the Lynchburg Regional Air Show committee and dean of the Liberty University School of Aeronautics, asked the supervisors Monday night to act as the fiscal agent — essentially helping with the accounting process — for the show. The county already acts as a fiscal agent for other organizations such as the Leesville Lake Association and would only receive and disburse money for the show.

I am so down with that. I've had a hankering for an air show for the last few years. I think the closest one is in VA Beach or something so I haven't made it to one. There are a lot of plane watchers around here. Head over to the comms tower any time you see that giant Air Force 2 (or whatever they call in when the VP isn't in it) doing touch and go's at LYH and there's always a bunch of cars there watching.

I always like it when the Confederate Air Force comes to town. They bring their B-17 and B-24 bombers. I know two years ago they also brought a P-51 Mustang but it was raining so they couldn't take it out. Not sure if they were here this past year or not. I have ALWAYS wanted to go up in one of those. Just need to come up with the $500!!

I'm a total warbird geek, so this is something I would love to see. We used to go to one in Atlanta every year -- we even got a guided behind the scenes tour one year from one of the CAF volunteers, and got to see a fighter in mid-restoration.

The Confederate Air Force has changed their name to Commemorative Air Force in deference to obvious opposition. They are based here in Texas and we see them flying around all over the place using their smaller planes to pull signs over stadiums and such. They have a primary museum in Midland and smaller museums that we have taken the kids to see in San Marcos, Galveston & the Rio Grande valley (close by South Padre Island).

Back in my reporter days I did several fly-alongs in advance of air shows (that every little town seems to have down here). It is amazing how well these old planes have held up for 3-quarters of a century in many cases. I'll never for get one flight where I had camera (since my photog was afraid of heights) and we were shooting aerials in a Korean-vintage fighter. Just as we had finished up some flyovers of Corpus Christi N.A.S., the pilot who must have been in his 70s asked me if I had what I needed & if I wanted to have some fun. Foolishly I replied in the affirmative to both. The guy immediately went into full throttle & started doing barrel rolls & loops. It might have been awesome videography if my battery hadn't have gone dead. I've never felt a more intense situation in my life that made even the largest roller coasters pale in comparison. Let the record state that I didn't toss my cookies but I did require 15-20 minutes on a bench to regain my balance after we landed.

Back when I was in high school in Illinois and being recruited by the Air Force (as a pilot & clearly as not an athlete), they took us to Chanute AFB and took us up in a KC-130. Based on that experience, I'd love to go up in a vintage bomber sometime.

It's been a while since we've had a good air show...I remember hearing pop talk about bringing them in when I was a kid and we had the Blue Angels and others....that's really a site to see.

so when this thing going down? if it didn't cost extra to be an aviation major, i totally would have picked that.

i love air shows, at least the one i went to here in Delaware with the air national guard. they had a a-10 p-51 and a f-22 and another plane that i forgot all fly in a formation. it was quite the sight to see all the different era of aviation in one formation.
I would love to see the blue angles and I would love even more to watch them from my dorm room window.
