I was invited to the Uva football game this year in the University Athletic Foundation box with their VP and all the other staffers....as tempting as it was to put on my LU polo and a sport coat (it really did cross my mind) you just cant do that.....but I sure as heck wouldnt put on a UVa shirt (if I had one). I know we have some on the board that are supporters of other schools...that's cool...I think if we had what we have now back when they first exposed to their other school of choice they would be LU only fans. Could be wrong but just my opinion.

I ran into this when Liberty played West Virginia in 2009. I was born there and I have been a Mountaineer my entire life and so is my family. However, when we all went to the game (my entire family has season tickets), I realized I went to Liberty and they are my school. Yeah, it was awkward at first, with all the drunk WVU fans screaming at me when I was dressed in all my red Liberty gear, even though I knew had WVU been playing anyone else I would have been in the Blue and Gold, but it was my school and no matter I still wanted them to beat WVU. I still wear my WVU jacket around campus from time to time, but Liberty is my school and no matter where I go especially when I'm back at home I make sure I represent Liberty.

I swear this was the example I was thinking of. When we played at WVU we had some people eating in the FC tent and there was discussion if they should be allowed. I honestly think it was around that point I started to see the logic in the idea. For those curious they were allowed...it was simply not celebrated

Its funny, I'm to the point now I'm not sure I like the idea of playing other football games during LU games in the tower. We were blowing out a team this year which caused some people to lose interest and some were huddled around a big game on TV even cheering loud....a few years ago I wouldnt have even noticed.

PS boo on you for wearing a WVU jacket. Next time your up there toss it on a couch after a big win.

I agree with both of you. In my opinion, it's ok to be critical at times (if we must), but it's not ok not to support our teams all the way. We can't keep whining about this and that if we're not "all in" ourselves. That doesn't mean we have to look at everything through rose-colored glasses, but we ought to be first and foremost LU fans and that should be the lens that we use - that's the name of the Board, right?

Agreed. I feel the same way about joining Flames Club or donating to LU. You simply must if your a fan, alumni or supporter. There are levels for everyone, FC has something like a $50 entry level and donating to LU could be as minimal as you want. Its not really about the amount (for those that dont have the capacity) its about simply getting in the mindset of doing it.


Various study's show that nobody gives a first time gift of a million dollars. A overwhelming % of those million dollar donors were giving on average $100 a year as a first time gift....after 12 years of consistent giving came the million dollar gift. The point of this ramble is it's not the amount it's just the idea of giving. Heck that's what we were founded on....Faith Partners really consisted of those that gave what they could often times at modest levels.

I will confess that I went to the WVU game.......and word WVU colors. Of course that could also be because I am an alum of WVU. So I get a pass on that one! Plus, a more of their players owed their eligibility to me then LU players!! But if you GO to an LU game, I agree you SHOULD wear LU colors. i would not wear my WVU gear to an LU game (Unles it is 2014? and they are in Morgantown again!) Heck, even when I WAS in college I wore only stuff from there, ok partly b/c it was free. However, I did cheer for my home state school, just like my team cheered for theirs. (And more often then not lost to mine) But that is different, b/c we didn't compete at the same level. But you wouldn't find a kid at UVa walking around wearing PITT gear or something. FAN UP !!! (I am now copyrighting that phrase for next year!)

I went to WVU. Taught at WVU. Where/when I played in college I wore the stuff from that school. Since I went to school out of state, I had to support my home state (IN) against those cheating ruffians (IL) Since i did not play in the Big 10 nor would we ever face IU or UofI I see nothing wrong with supporting them.

I know i have only been around a year so i cant speak of the past. but as much as i would love to be playing the big boys every weekend, i still like the idea that at the begining of the year we have a legit "chance" to be national champs.( i know that we first have to make playoffs and win. but there is always a chance) would have liked to been in the playoffs this year, but hey things happen. we had fun at the games this year, and hopefully the son might get to play some next year so that should increase the fun for us whether it is 1A or 1AA. as far as facilities go, other than a 60,00 seat stadium liberty is head and shoulders above a lot of schools. we had the chance to go to a bunch of 1A schools during the recuiting process and i was truly amazed at how liberty compared. since i'm on here i will express my opinion about the coaching posts. i am a rocco fan and will be one regardless of where he is coaching.{ hopefully here at least the next four years}. i think there is some tweaking that can be done, but as far as a leader i personally think we have a good one. GO FLAMES!!!!!

Also, bringing up Miami and USC... Are you serious? Florida and California are two of the best producers of top athletic talent in the country (along with Texas, yes I know Sly). The point is you don't have to recruit in state well in order to be a quality team. What Logic was saying, is that is what ND has done. Why? Cause Indiana doesn't produce the same football talent as say... Florida, California, Ohio, Texas, etc.
Dr. Falwell's vision was for us to play Notre Dame in football (not just basketball).
We have had several games on ESPN3 (not earth shattering news), but if we are able to join an FBS conference, we will have the opportunity to play on ESPN. How many games have MAC teams been on ESPN? Or other "no-name" teams from "no-name"? It happens all the time. Turn the TV on to ESPN on a Wednesday night, you'll see two teams you don't care a whole lot about, but they're there. We don't have to play Alabama to get on ESPN.
About the casual fan... People do not know who Presbyterian is, and they don't know anything about them, nor do they care. You'd be kidding yourself if you don't think that a home game against Bowling Green wouldn't bring in more people than a game against Presbyterian. Why? Because it's a name they are familiar with. The "casual fan" pays attention to the name, and they hear that LU is playing a school they have heard of, that isn't thought of as being a D-2 shmo, they will be much more interested to at least want to know what happened in the game. Example: Last year LU played VMI at home. After the game, I went to Wal-Mart and an LPD officer pulled up next to me because he saw my Liberty sweatshirt, and asked who won the game. He was interested because of the name of VMI. If it was Sav St. he wouldn't have cared a lick.... either that or our football program is better off in the eyes of the locals than we think.

But, especially in Miami's case, they built their program and fan base on local and in state talent. We could get into a long debate about the imortance of having in state recruits but that would be another thread. ND IS the exception to the rule. But how is that working out for them now? (Or since 88?)
Let me try it this way, with one truism and one question:
You can not be a succesful program (HS, College or Pro) if people show up b/c of who you play. To be succesful, people have to show up b/c of who you are. (Ask HMO if this is true, he is a SMGT grad!) People who grow with a program are the ones who are the foundation for success. Those who come just b/c of who you are playing are fools gold.
My question is this: Joining a conference is a two way street. We can't just say "We wanna be in the ACC" and presto we are in. So this is the question: What do WE bring to a BCS conference? What can we offer the ACC? Big East? Conf. USA?

SCH - IMO, it has to come from the people themselves not the athletic department. The Athletic Department can do a good job facilitating that, but it will take people like SUM to get their circle of friends motivated and involved.

Wrong group.....although I never saw much on the grass roots level from them anyway.

I love LU, but what FBS conference would even consider us? What do we have to offer a FBS conference? There are so many FCS teams looking to make the jump when the ban is lifted. What could I tell my Georgia Southern, GA State, and APP. State friends that would make my case for us?

Georgia Southern and App. State there is nothing you can say..they would be better for any conference then LU would. Georgia State they have a grand total of ONE year of football history.
