Now that the comittee has put our 2010 season to rest, it's time to look ahead. What are our strengths going into next seasons, and what are the areas we need to address from both a personnel and schematic standpoint? I'll start with the offense.

STRENGTHS:

MIKE BROWN Nuff said Brennan is a fine backup who could start for most BSC teams.

Receiving corps: With a healthy Summers, Garner and Eden returning and maybe Curry to go with Kelly and Hayes.

Fullback: Gagliardi and Bah are young and have immense untapped potential IMHO.

CONCERNS:

Offensive Line: 4 Starters graduate from a unit that couldn't generate much of a run game this year. Likely replacements include Mondor, Weathrington and Lundy. Another FBS transfer would sure come in handy here.

Running Back: Davis didn't produce. SirChauncy should be a change of pace back, not an every down guy. Barnett has breakaway potential, but lacks size. Aldreakis??

Maybe O-Line needed a shakeup? Maybe this will help?

I think if we go to a true "spread" offense, SirChauncey will be perfect, since he will be the change of pace to Mike Brown. Barnett will help a lot, too. Pratt needs to get some looks, as well. I think he can be very good, but I could just be biased about a Southwest Florida kid.

Defense will lose some key players too, but there is some young talent.

The most important issue, is us to bring our A game every game. I don't care if we're playing a "revenge" game (RMU, JMU, CCU) or a cupcake (PC, CSU, VMI). Bring our A game every week, and we're in the top 10, the playoffs, etc. etc. etc.

But O-line, RB, LB, DL all need to be looked at. We lose a lot on our front 7 D.

Aldreakis will be back (so i heard) so he'll add the lack of size. plus Mickens should be available as well.

only real weakness imo is the OL/DL. LB will be young but has alot of talent. Rocco needs a get a couple of transfers at the OL/DL and maybe a LB and we're good.

The OL and DL questions are key...it will also be interesting to see what if anything changes as far as defensive schemes go.

I think we will have a playoff-caliber offense next year. The D is what I'm most concerned about. Last night, they played well and made some pretty big plays (Bolt's INT for a TD was awesome to watch) and really apart from the CCU game we did well this year. However we do lose a lot of talent this year. I think that if our new starters next year play up to what is expected of them than we win the Big South next year. I'm done with sharing B-South Championships and I'm positive the players are too. Next year no more leaving it up to the committee (I know, I know we've said the same things for the past couple of years, but seriously "Unfinished Business" has to end sometime haha)

OL is a need and we have 3 verbal's in our recruiting class to address this.

I will be interested to see who we add to our class late to address the D issues and to see what coaching or scheme changes we make.

We have a cupboard full of offensive skill position talent. Not worried there.

I think having a good bruising back will help but I do wonder about both sides of the trenches. we will have big Asa back to run the middle but the question lies with who else will step up (especially if we go with a 4-3 or something like it next year)

While you normally don't expect a true Freshman to step in and start in the OL, Grant Jones just may be good enough to do it. If he and Mondor can win the tackle jobs, we would have "bookends" we can build on for 4 years. I would love it! 8)

That's a tough schedule. It's the same as this year's schedule, with NC State replacing Ball State. If we go 5-1 in the conference again, lose the non-conference games, and don't add two "cupcakes", we' may be on the outside looking in again. Stony Brook isn't losing many starters at all (I think only a couple on each side of the ball and the game is up there.) I'm not trying to be pessimistic, and I don't think we should have lost any of the games we did, but we did. In the end, you're only as good as your record (or the brilliant committee) decides you are.

Interesting that the three losses this season are all home games next season.

I still think that with the kind of speed that Jon mentioned that we have coming back, that either going with something similar to the blur offense that Oregon runs (or the Speedway O down at Bethune Cookman), we could really do some things next year. Id have to look at the rosters again but I dont know that there will be an offense in the conference that could hang with us if we sent to a no huddle or more uptempo offense next year

Just looking over our roster real quick, and a few thoughts.

1. All of our skill position players are back. They’ve already proved themselves over the past year or two. Plus, we should have more depth with Eden, Garner, and any other new comers. With Brown at QB, Summers and Kelly at WR, we should be just fine. At RB, we have Davis, Holloway, and Barnett back. Unless AA or someone else comes in we need to just make up our mind that we are a spread team next year. Holloway and Barnett are great backs in a spread system. If AA is back, then all the better.

2. Offensive line – the middle 3 (LG, C, & RG) are pretty much set with Boyd, Lundy and Weatherington. Those 3 should be fine. We need 2 tackles. Herring, Mondor, Brown, and Jones will compete at these positions. A transfer would be nice too.

3. Our defensive backfield should be good. We only lose Manns. Look at all this depth we have – Hobby, Lee, Fogg, Hawkes, Claiborne, Vinson, Lillard, Robinson, Mayo. Wow

4. OLB we should be fine with Connolly, Ward and Hyland.

5. I’m worried about MLB. This is the quarterback of our defense and we have no one returning with any notable playing time. I’m hoping Sigmon can step in at the Mike. Fath and Jenkins should also compete for time. But we are thin here.

6. DT looks good with Chapman and Schuster. I’m hoping we use the 4 man front as this could also help lower the burden of not having much depth at MLB.

7. I think we’ll be fine at DE. Freeman came on very well near the end of the season. Paco Varol has shown flashes. We need depth here, but have some young guys on the roster.

8. We all know how good Bevins is, and Larsson has been very solid for us as well.

9. This will be our year to make a big splash. We have a ton of talent and depth combined with experience. Our best senior class EVER. We’ve got to do something in 2011.

We could look for a JUCO transfer offensive tackle/MLB, like what we got in Bolt. Give us some experience without having to rely on a kid with more questions than answers dropping down from FBS.

If we get a solid FBS transfer, then by all means, take him. But a solid JUCO transfer would help, too.

I feel as though our offense is going to be exceptional next year with the help of a transfer or 2 at the OL. If A.A is coming back, that makes it more the better for an effective running game which we lacked this year. The depth and expierence of our recieving core is phenominal. Where talking about a potential All-American in Summers returning, not to mention Kelly who has definately proved that he can be a great WR, add solid speed from Hayes, Garner, and Eden, the skys the limit there.

Defensively I believe well be better than most may think. Though in a 3/4 scheme, the DE's are essential. I wonder who will step up and take the side opposite from Freeman. OLB looks solid. With Connely returning, Hyland, and Ward. I believe the MLB is the biggest question mark. Though he doesn't have a lot of expierence, Jenkins looks as though he'll take that challenge. I was at the S.B. game and was seated right where the MLB's where warming up. Jenkins looks like a solid 6'2 250 which can move better than a lot of the OLB's. Let's not forget he's an SEC transfer and we have seen how reliable Alex Stadler, another SEC transfer has become. Fath looks good as well. Still wearing that knee brace from a torn ACL (I think), he seems to be moving fine. He may challenge Jenkins for playing time if not taking over the other MLB in our defense. I believe the secondary is going to be better than ever before...thats a lot of depth and speed returning back there and im anxious to see what they'll bring to the table.
