So for those that were around to see the 1990 team that was ranked #8... How would this team compare in terms of potential, overall talent, and performance? Was the '90 team deserving of the 8th ranking? I would assume no, because they did not make any postseason noise. Just curious.

Bold prediction, but Im calling the Paladins and Terriers to both upset Appy State.

Furple is falling apart, and that game is at the Rock. I doubt it. Wofford I could see. I think App loses at Georgia Southern.

I was around then. I would say they were not deserving of that ranking due to what happened to them after they were ranked. They lost 3 in a row to Villanova, Delaware State (Even blew a 37-9 lead in the 4th), and Youngstown St after starting off with wins vs Kutztown, JMU, SW Texas, and Morehead. Robbie Justino put up some great numbers passing but we struggled running the ball.

We played tougher schedules back then and the talent level was about the same as it is now. A 9-2 record now would be comparable to back then being 7-4 when you consider schedule strength.
QB Justino vs Brown - About the same. Justino was more accurate and put it up more but Brown certainly is more mobile.
WR/TE- None back then were as good as Summers but collectively probably better back then with Nelson, Parrish, Thomas, and Queen.
OL - Better now
DB - Better back then with McConnell, Carol, Green, and Monroe.
DL - Chapman comparable to Barre in talent

Hard to compare since the systems are so different but I hope that this is enough to go on.

I'm not so sure. If you are going to use NFL success as a measuring stick for talent level, we had a lot more LU alum who had legitimate pro careers in the late 80s and early 90s than we have had in the past decade.

All of these guys at some point were NFL starters (if only briefly):

Fred Banks
Eric Green
Dwayne Carswell
Kelvin Edwards
Wayne Haddix
James McKnight
Richard Shelton

More recently, Samkon Gado got a start or 2 in Green Bay when they had a rash of injuries at RB. I love Rashaad, and think he may represent Liberty better than any of them, but he sees limited PT, and it looks like he is now the #3 RB at Jacksonville.

BYD is talking about the talent level we’ve had under Rocco. Give Rocco 10 years as our coach, and I’m sure our list of NFL players will be approaching double figures.

I am trying to relate the 2 based on the teams that we played back then vs now and I would say that we played better teams on a consistent basis than we do now. At least we played more teams that made the playoffs and colleges that are more recognizable than what we have been scheduling. Of course that may be due to the fact that we were Independent back then and there other Independents looking to fill there schedules so we hooked up or maybe times have changed so much it makes it difficult to compare. Not only did we play more playoff bound teams we often played teams that went far in the playoffs such as UCF, YSU, Samford, Boise St, JMU, Troy St,App State, and others. The year 1990 we played 2 teams that made the playoffs in UCF and YSU and others that came close and in some years we have played 4 teams that were playoff bound as we did in 1991.

With the exception of Freddy Banks, all the players that Olldflame listed played together on the same roster. The talent that Coach Hout brought in was amazing considering nearly all of that talent was recruited while we were a DII school before our transition.

TheLouder - I agree wholeheartedly.

Call it being unbiased....or trying to be unbiased. I've complained about Montana being overrated, SC State being overrated, the SWAC getting love for no reason and just about every time the numbers suggested schools got their rankings on name alone. Being a fan of Liberty shouldn't change that.

You have to admit it's pretty funny that the first year the rankings mean relatively little to us (BS auto bid) we move up the board during our bye-week.

Deserving or undeserving I want liberty ranked as high as we can get. I'd rather be 1 and undeserving than 25+ and deserving. The title of this website is Flame Fans. I feel as if maybe being a Liberty fan does change things in this case.

We are a great team. We've just come up short in two very winnable games for us. It happens to the best of us. Finally we put together a complete game at VMI. Lets just hope that after our bye we are rested and more focused to play like that every weekend.

Just to stir the pot, Olldflame, you can list a HC for each of these players?

They all played for Sam Rutigliano and/or Morgan Hout. Too much like work to get more specific. Eric was recruited by Hout, and only played one year for Sam, but that year probably made him a first round pick.

James and Dwayne were recruited by and played for Sam. Dwayne started his Flames career as a tailback (a big tailback).
