Summer spent at LU strengthens Summers' game
By Chris Lang
Published: October 07, 2010

In Florida, Chris Summers says, it’s the speed that matters. The speed will get colleges to notice you, not bulk.

“We didn’t really lift weights much in high school,” he said.

That explains why, when the 6-foot-4 Summers arrived at Liberty three years ago, he could barely bench press 135 pounds.

“He looked like Ichabod Crane,” Flames receivers coach Charlie Skalaski said. “Or Bambi.”

Great article, I liked this quote:
Summers’ offseason goals surely will turn to a bigger prize than pick-up hoops, though. His statistical surge this season has him squarely on the radar of NFL scouts, though they’re not officially allowed to talk to Summers or Liberty’s coaches about him until he’s either a senior or has declared for the NFL Draft.

That doesn’t mean Skalaski hasn’t gotten his share of knowing winks and nods from scouts who have come through to evaluate Liberty’s senior class.

“Here’s what I’ll say,” Skalaski said. “One scout said to me — they were here to see our seniors — and he said, ‘Wow, there sure is an 800-pound gorilla in the middle of the room, isn’t there?’”

Study You have to love a football coach who can make a Washington Irving reference. :clapping

I thought it was pretty funny at the JMU game when I got the goat of a JMU fan. Every time a ball was thrown to Summers I would say something to the effect that JMU couldn't cover him. Well, finally in the 4th Qt., a JMU DB broke a pass up intended for Summers and the JMU fan retorted back that they could cover him. I said that 1 out of 20 wasn't bad! :P

When the Flames were waiting to come back on the field for the 2nd Half, I went down to the rails where the players were coming out and yelled to Chris, "they can't cover you!". I enjoy watching the tandem of Brown to Summers. It's unbelievable we'll have both of these guys back next year as well!

I've been trying to come up with something clever along the lines 10+1=.....something...If anyone can think of something good let me know I want to make a sign haha.

Keep in mind that I am an Accounting nerd. :) How about

At LU
10 + 1 = 6

I know it's obvious, but it will make more than a few people laugh, especially if the people on the "Baptist" side see it. When you get interviewed on TV, give me my props! Or maybe not....

Maybe even better would be:

LU Math:
10 + 1 = 6

I think Chris has the opportunity to be drafted in the first 3 rounds. Think about it. He has one more year to continue to put on weigh and as Lang reported he is STILL GROWING! What if he grew another inch and just added 10-15 more pounds. He would look like Calvin Johnson!

No chance. If Rashad went in the 7th, we're looking at 6th-or-7th at best, IMO.

This obviously begs the question: Is Chris a more valuable player than Rashad?
I would say yes. Runningbacks like Rashad are a dime a dozen. WR's like Summers are few and far between. When you look at speed, size, and hands, Chris has it all. Obviously he needs to still get some things done for his Sr. season, but I definitely think that Summers gets drafted before the 7th round. Without a doubt.

I wish Rocco had purchased a dozen Rashads before the season.

If Rashads are a dime a dozen why can't any of our backs run the ball consistently??? Rashad and Summers are great players for LU but I have a hard time thinking that Chris is any more valuable to the team than Rashad was.

Rashad Jennings was more valuable to the team.

Chris Summers is a better pro prospect.

It's two completely different arguments. Jennings fell to the seventh round because there were questions about his ability to grind out yards between the tackles and his ability to turn the corner and run with breakaway speed. And two things that NFL tailbacks HAVE to be proficient at nowadays -- catching out of the backfield and blitz pickup -- were things Rashad was still raw at when he was a college senior. They were also things he consciously worked on that year, and it's something that is impressing the Jacksonville brass now.

It's too early to predict where Summers will be drafted. No idea what the receiver class will look like next season. But I don't think Summers will last to the 250th pick.

Lang, BYD, thanks. That's what I was trying to get at. When I was saying Rashad's are a dime a dozen, that was saying there are plenty of quality backs just like him all over college football that can go all over the draft, which I believe is why he was drafted in the 7th round. As BYD reiterated. Summers is more valuable because of his abilities at his position that will set him above the rest.

There's no question that Summers is a better pro prospect just because of his build and hands and his position. If he continues to put up similar or better numbers I would think somewhere between 3rd and 4th roudn would be reasonable. Asa will get drafted as well somewhere in that point because some team would love to stick him in the 3-4 as their nose tackle. I think Mike would have a shot at being a Slash type player who signs as a free agent of maybe 7th round pick. Rashad is helping to pave the way for these guys with his success.

jcmanson wrote:Just looked at the media guide for career and single season receiving rankings:

LU Records:
2548 Career Receiving Yards
176 Career Receptions
22 Career Touchdowns

1075 Season Receiving Yards
81 Season Receptions
10 Season TDs

Chris' numbers:
1178 Career Receiving Yards
91 Career Receptions
12 Career Touchdowns

561 Season Receiving Yards
43 Season Receptions
8 Season TDs

In order to break each of these records Chris needs to average:
80.58 yds per game to break career yards
5 receptions per game to break career receptions
0.58 tds per game to break career tds

85.67 to break season yards
6.33 to break season receptions
3 tds over 5 games to break season tds

This kid's about to own every receiving record we have.
Just an update to Chris' run at our single season records:
Chris has 62 receptions, 835 yards, 12 tds. He already owns the single season td mark.
He needs to average 6.33 receptions per game to break the single season reception mark.
He needs to average 80 receiving yards per game to break the single season receiving yard mark.

*Note each of these averages are over 3 games which would not include any playoff games.
