Yes this is an old article (April of 10)but other questions brought this up...

College sports: White House tweaks Title IX rules

Schools can no longer rely on a survey for female students about college sports to show that they are compliant with Title IX requirements, Biden announced Tuesday.

Quick review of this article raises a couple questions I have.

Title IX demands gender equity for programs that receive federal education money.

Does LU receive federal education money (unless this is referring to Pell grants and Stafford loans I wasn't aware that they did)

Title IX demands gender equity for programs that receive federal education money. Under it, colleges have had three ways to show they are compliant when it comes to sports: demonstrating that women’s participation is proportional to their enrollment, showing that the school is expanding the number of sports teams for women (which defers the need for proportional compliance by several years), or showing that the school is meeting the interests and abilities of women on campus.

So when comparing do they count number of scholorships or sports available???

Also as far as I can tell LU is 53% F 47% M and each have 9 DI sports.

As a mini reference(it will probably change bc I'm pretty sure I'm off on the details)

Title IX compliance allows for 3 scenarios in which you can be considered "compliant." Make 1 of these three and you're good. I thought we added wrestling bc we were out of compliance in the other direction - males were'nt being represented enough.

1 - % of M/F participants equals the M/F ratio of total students
2 - Being able to show a continued progression toward Goal #1
3 - Being able to show that the current sports accommodate the interests of underrepresented gender

I've never completely understood #3. Is this based off survey results? Is there a % that the survey has to reach in order to say there is interest in the underrepresented gender?

20+ added Male players would likely force more women's sports depending on where we are with T9 now. Another sport or two means more $$$ commitment for schollies, staff and travel.

So the cost of expanding football (63 to 85, right?) becomes more than just the cost of expanding football.

Although I can't speak to any of the $$$ status of our Athletic Department, announced flames club donations, budget disclosures on here and that really big building that's almost done would suggest we can cover what we need to.

That is what I was thinking, wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something bigger. Assuming we're fine now you're talking 40 (20m 20f) new scholarships. While I understand that is not cheap compared to what we've been doing I can't see that being much of a hindrance. If each scholarship is around 25k, that comes out to a cool $1mill chump change to the expansion that goes on continuously at LU.

Again stretching out on a limb - The sale value of a scholarship is 20k+, but the production cost of having a student take classes, 2 years of housing, etc. is much cheaper.

Staff and Travel budgets for the new women's sports would be where the money becomes a factor. Equipment, trainers, and another SID staffer(I'm trying to help you npretty!) would come into play, and we would definitely need more plastic letters for Dan Adams as he changes the rarely read A-Frame signs around campus. While I'm talking about Dan Adams, he's wearing a yellow shirt today. As a staff member of the Athletic Department. On "Wear Red" day. BOOOOOOOO!


All this to say it can be a hindrance to schools who are squeezing their budget. All signs point to this not being a major hurdle for us.

it's an absolute cancer to college sports. needs to be re-written to account for the fact that FBS football and D-1 basketball practically pay for themselves.
