I remember last fall that Liberty announced upgrades future upgrades to Williams Stadium and the Vines Center. Now that the first phase of the Williams Stadium construction is nearing completion, I'm wondering when is it that LU plans on beginning work on the Vines Center. Does anyone here know?

The website for the announcement is here: http://www.libertyflames.com/index.cfm? ... 25&TeamID=

i dont think the vines center stuff is happening anytime soon/ever. i think the current plan for convo/expansion is a civic center in campbell county on the very southern edge of campus, but even that is just an idea and is just being tossed around, as that land may be used for commercial development instead (or dorms, or an engineering school). and any idea of a civic center in lynchburg is also kind of dead until we can play nice with the city. so im pretty sure the vines center stuff will be put off at least until we figure out what we are going to do with the extremely southern part of east campus that we own. engineering school, dorms, civic center. or shopping center?

We will finish all 3 phases of Williams Stadium before we touch the Vines. So, the more appropriate question would be, when do we start phase 2 of Williams Stadium?

Is that official or just your opinion?

They gave estimates for all of the Williams phases and also for the Vines Center. They weren't definite or anything and I also don't remember what they were. But if you can find the original announcements it'll probably say in there. Also I think they weren't gonna do it until they had the donations for it.

That's interesting. Can anyone verify this?

I remember taking a Sports Management Facilities class and we it was explained on a regular basis that the Vines Center was a perfect example of how NOT to build a basketball facility.

When I saw what they wanted to do my first thought was that theyd have to shut the place down and take the roof off just so they could build the seats up...either that or level the place and start over with a clean sheet design...course either way itd adversely affect convocation (not that the dorm students would mind that one bit...)

Yes, the roof would have to be lifted off. They have done that at other places with the same design and roof. But I had not heard that the proposed plans for Vines had been scrapped due to structural issues. If anything, the possible civic center was the primary thing that pushed the plan to the backburner. Convo is what requires more seats and not hoops right now.

All that structural talk is just Libertyisms.

People act like it's a bad thing that we may one day fill The Vines. That's a great thing. I hope we have more demand than we have seats. We don't need a huge arena. I would love a 6000 seat arena that made students actually get tickets to get in.

I don't care how good we are, we never need a bigger basketball arena. Plenty of national championship caliber programs play in small arenas, and it makes for a better atmosphere. See Indoor, Cameron.
Except basketball is like 10%* of what the Vines Center is used for.

*That's just a number off the top of my head.

So did I (the second time) actually but now there are no kids on campus who knew Demoss as only 2 floors. Maybe the seniors were freshman when the third floor was being worked on but they surely didn't here the BS excuse of structural integrity or something to that effect. Nothing stays the same at LU that is for sure.

okay so today in convo a panel of the white platform the hangs from the roof of the vines center fell during convo. it fell in the isle between the floor seats so no one was hurt, but 15 minutes later they evacuated all of the students who sat on the floor, while the speaker continued. it looked as if it were heavy with water damage, and other panels looked as if they were ready to burst as well.

edit: heres the part that fell:

yeah, the roof seems like it's always leaking somewhere.
