James Madison and Liberty had plenty of reason to crow Saturday.http://www.roanoke.com/sports/vtfootball/wb/260336
They have reason to be excited about their prospects for the rest of the season too.
The Dukes became only the second Division I-AA team to upset a ranked I-A team when they stunned then-No. 13 Virginia Tech 21-16. It was their first win over a I-A squad in 20 years.
"We have a national title contender," JMU coach Mickey Matthews said Monday. "We knew that before the game. We think it now.
"The good thing is we have an open date to kind of get our feet back on the ground."
The Division I-AA Flames also bumped off a I-A foe Saturday, although that was less of a shocker. Liberty won 27-23 at Mid-American Conference member Ball State, recording its first victory over a I-A team in 21 years.
"This was kind of one of the next steps that you have to take as a ... [I-AA] program to start to become a program of national prominence," Liberty coach Danny Rocco said. "Hopefully it will make us very, very hard to beat when we get into Big South Conference play because of our confidence that we gained."
