Ball State wasn't kidding when they were bragging on their Special Teams. That was one area we used to excel in but they made us look terrible (and our own stupid penalties helped too). This will be an area to work on in practice this week.

I agree, Bigfoot4049, it looks like you did find yourself a QB. Wenning played very well. His passes were right on the money and he showed poise throughout the second half.

Hope the rest of the season goes well!

we lost one option there tonight with Fath going down.

Alright, I am still recovering...

I sat in general admission, surrounded by BSU fans, with a friendly LU family a couple rows back.

BSU gameday experience is kinda weak. Stadium is decent, but not great. Band was fairly entertaining. Their "third down" tradition is to have the student section pump their arms and say "Chirp, chirp, chirp" over and over. It was kinda cool to be honest, but the graphic they put up that flashed like crazy was a bit much. Nothing else worth mentioning, except that their press box looks nice. Can't wait for ours to look even better. :)

We always looked like we belonged in this game. The line of scrimmage was a constant battle. We were back and forth, we made our mistakes, they made theirs. For a while, we were playing VERY disciplined, and I thought we were going to run away with it. But mistakes came back to bite us. Had we kept things under control and continued our disciplined play, the game would have been ours easily.

Regardless, the dropped pass was simply brutal. It was an easy touchdown, totally uncontested. And he just couldn't haul it in. Incredible. But that backup QB (probably now starting QB) was so, so much better. He energized the team, for sure.

What a win. Proud to be a Flame tonight.

The game went just about how I thought it would except the final score.
You guys have a great coach and staff, QB and supporting cast of talented players!
Coach Parrish was right about Brown and speaking of QB's I think we may have found one in true freshman Keith Wenning!

I have enjoyed getting to watch your team and posting with all of you on this board!
Just went on BSUfans.com and I'll say it here, it has truly been a pleasure hanging with the Cardinals fans this week. You guys are class acts. Hopefully we can schedule more games between us in the future.

Ball State will be fine and needs to get focused on the Boilermakers. I was impressed with Wenning but boy would I love to have Mr. Brown on our team that kid was really fun to watch.

By the way Jason Whitlock does post all the time at BSUFans.com and he was a former player in the 80's - he also does not like Coach Parrish or our AD and University President and in his typical fashion has been very outspoken about it.

He was so frustrated last year he cut way back on his posting.

I hope a lot of Flame fans get to the airport and greet your team as moments like you are having are rare and should be cherished.

Good luck and I will continue to follow your team going forward - great game!

Mike Connolly jumped on this loose football to secure Liberty's stunning 27-23 victory over Ball State on Saturday, the team's second win over a FBS team in program history.

Completing a day of upsets for Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) programs, Liberty became the fourth FCS program to down a FBS team on Saturday. The Flames used a late touchdown by Mike Brown and numerous key defensive stands to upend Ball State, 27-23, inside Scheumann Stadium.

The win upped Liberty's record to 2-0 on the year and marked the program's second victory over a FBS team. The first came in a 25-24 stunner on Oct. 14, 1989, against another Mid-American Conference opponent, Eastern Michigan, in Ypsilanti, Mich.

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State football team dropped its first game of the season Saturday evening as the Cardinals suffered a 27-23 defeat to visiting Liberty at Scheumann Stadium. The Cardinals rallied from a 14-3 first half deficit to take a second half lead before Liberty scored the go ahead touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

"You have to make plays if you want to win," head coach Stan Parrish said. "We dug ourselves in a big hole but we made a great comeback. We made a couple of good plays late, drove it down but could not get it done at the end. Liberty is a good football team, I tried to tell everyone that this week. Their team could certainly compete in the Mid-American Conference."

Yeah, the post game radio guys said "You have to learn from this game, you were toe to toe with a team that would compete and win in the MAC, now take what you learned, and use it against Central [Michigan] and Eastern [Michigan]."

So the LU Flames equipment truck driver just called me and told me that the team was singing in the locker room after the win. There was one song and maybe you guys know it but it was from the movie, "The Replacements" (I haven't watched this movie all the way through just b/c I don't like it and believe you me, I love football movies.....anyways) My hubby said it was the song when characters in the movie are in jail. Does anyone know what that song is?? I was also told the Flames were singing the "Star Spangled Banner"... :)

MUNCIE, Ind. — Asa Chapman’s goal was simple. Push the line. Get some pressure. Make Ball State quarterback Keith Wenning uncomfortable.

Chapman, Liberty’s massive, 6-foot-5, 380-pound nose tackle did more than that Saturday night at Scheumann Stadium. He not only pushed the Ball State line. He moved it. And when Wenning tried to cock his arm to throw on the game’s most important play, he found Chapman’s big paw right in his face.

So on 4th-and-2 with the game on the line, Chapman knocked the ball loose, sacked Wenning and forced a fumble, leading to a wild celebration on the Flames’ sideline as they realized that they’d pulled an upset 21 years in the making.
My favorite part of the story ...
“Every time I threw an interception tonight, I looked at the scoreboard and said, ‘You know, we’re still in this game,’” Brown said. “Coach Rocco came up to me before that last drive and said, ‘Look, we just need you to lead us on one drive. That’s all we need.’”

MUNCIE, Ind. — Liberty’s top two tailbacks — Korrey Davis and SirChauncey Holloway — combined for eight yards on five carries in the Flames’ 27-23 victory over Ball State on Saturday night.

A great job by the Cardinals’ defense, or a calculated gameplan by Liberty’s coaching staff?

It was certainly more of the latter. Liberty coach Danny Rocco and offensive coordinator Brandon Streeter put together a package of plays that included screen passes, short outs and throws to the tailbacks on the outside. And the only player running the ball with regularity Saturday was Brown, who took off on designed draws and scrambles around the edge.

I am thinking it was Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive".

I'm back in the hotel room and still cant sleep, and have to leave to drive to the airport in just a few hours. Oh well, sleep when your dead!

Football is such a crazy game. We went from having the ball with a chance to go up 21-3 to allowing them back in the game 14-10 because of a mistake. The great news about this game is we didnt get lucky to win. We actually tried to lose it but still couldnt. This game could have been a lot worse if a few penalties wouldnt have happened or a few costly interceptions.

That's the great news, the fact that we can over come a few mistakes and mental breakdowns and still win. Most teams at our level fold once they've dominated a first half like we did only to hand the game right back to them.

As far as the biggest win, it's on the top 5 list for sure, but I think it'll be overtaken in a few months with a Playoff win 8)

We're really good guys....really good.

so for kicks and giggles i decided to head over to JMU's board and read what they are saying about us... for the first time on their board it seems, the are showing us atleast a little respect and expressing some sort of concern about us being their next game!!

This was an all-radio game for me. I'm staying with friends this weekend, and they have no Internet or radio in-house, so I spent whole game sitting in car outside listening on radio. Hence, my perspective is skewed. Nonetheless:

*Big step overall for program, but proving it and improving upon it is the game for the rest of the season, because the other events of today set-up opportunities for that. 9/25 could be HUGE, but RM is no slouch, and anything can go wrong on the road.

*Streeter really impressed me. He's not married to a particular style. If he can remain that adaptive as his career progresses, he could be VERY special to watch.

*Danny Rocco's faith in Mike Brown (not that I expected any less) reinforces a lot of what we already know about the man's coaching ability.

*Mike Brown matured tonight. If its possible, despite 3 INT's, his game moved forward tonight. Just a junior?!

*I didn't see the game, so I'm curious what the breakdown was on pk blocking. It became a trend in this one...

*I don't like a "bend but don't break" defense. Some in the game thread were calling it that. I don't believe they bent as much as they were constantly starting BS drives w/ backs already against the proverbial wall. Very stout tonight, and sounded like some discipline, as well as sure tackling. Both will be necessary against JMU's ground game in two weeks.

I'm through...

Actually, one more thing. Alan York is a talent. Don't get me wrong: I LOVED Jerry Edwards. But Alan's clear descriptions tonight brought the game alive in a way I haven't experienced a broadcast in a long time.

What greatly helped, and shouldn't go unnoticed, is that Paul Rutigliano is really coming into his own as an analyst (even acknowledging his control of his emotions, which has occasionally been a weakness). He's starting to really bring a lot to the broadcast in the form of additional commentary.

Lastly, Nick's analysis from the sideline was timely, concise, and helpful. Well done, sir.

Now, finally, that is all.

Congrats on the win fellas. I told one of you before the game I had a feeling today would be the day that you got the FBS monkey off your back, after fighting so hard against WVU last year. Nice to be proven right.

Now get ready to be shutout in 2 weeks by the most stout defense in the FCS ;)
