We also were very impressed with 6'8 Jr Andrew Smith from Pompono Beach (Highlands Christian) FL, who finished with 11 points and was named the camp's Runner-up MVP. However, even more important, we're talking about a major sleeper for the big time college level who reminds us of Florida's Chandler Parsons, but with more toughness and better athleticism. He also was named the Slam Dunk Champ, showed a nice looking 3-point shot early in the Top 30 All-Star Game, and impressed us with his quickness around the basket and ability to pass, block shots, and run the court. Smith also told us that schools like Temple, Richmond, Stanford, Cornell, and Florida are showing the most interest and confirmed that he has a 3.9 gpa.

As long as he has skill we can always red-shirt him and beef him up. Can't pass on a skilled big man at this level. Looks like a solid pick up.

wow this is the high school I went to

I'll have to check in about him. I think his dad coached the middle school team when I was there.

he's not a big man. he's a 6'7 athletic 2/3...which can cause alot of problems in the Big South...Slam Dunk champ and can shoot the the three :clapping :clapping I mean if Clarke Francis is high on him he must be really good.

hopefully he's grows a couple more inches and turns into the next Gordon Hayward

Word is he is a bit of a late bloomer. Playing small Christian school ball he has flown under the radar. But he had a great summer that has him on the radar of a number of schools. Word I am hearing from the Mountain is that the staff is really jazzed to land this kid's commitment.

This school has plenty of LU connections. Morgan Hout used to coach football there before heading to Vero Beach. And the current AD's daughter went to LU.

You're forgetting the best connection :D

Tons of connections though. The school's headmaster's kids went there. A couple of teachers have graduated from LU. Coach Hout actually started the football program at HCA. Also, James Spencer's girlfriend went there.

According to a source, Liberty received a commitment from one of its primary targets. Forward Andrew Smith of Pompano Beach (Fla.) Highlands Christian, committed following his official visit. Smith cancelled visits to Cornell, Bucknell and Denver.
Smith was under the radar most of the summer with 561 Select. Liberty assistant Jason Eaker followed him extensively in Miami. Smith hails from a competitive, winning program and has been lauded for his work ethic.
from scout...

hopefully the staff can land Mr. Ford before the Big Schools come calling..

According to sources close to the situation, 6-foot-8 forward Andrew Smith verbally committed to Liberty over the weekend following an official visit to the Lynchburg, Va. campus.

Smith chose the Flames over Denver, Cornell and Bucknell. He ran with Team 561 Select on the AAU circuit this summer.

Smith joins Jeremy Canty and Jernell Hughes in Liberty's 2011 recruiting class.
Brief write-up from ESPN. They don't have any info on him.

Even so, we have 13 scholarship players, and none of them are seniors in terms of eligibility. I can think of one redshirt Junior though, who would make a GREAT graduate assistant next year.

Don't you know that each year we have to replace 1/3 of the team

This kid seems pretty good to me. Hope we hold onto him. I like the Hayward comparison, and think he could be that kind of player for us, someone on the wing that can score and shows hustle and gives a spark.

I know this family and Andrew comes from good genes. His mom was a record breaking basketball player at Tenn. Temple University back in the early '80s and his dad was an amazing baseball player there as well. Liberty landed a great kid and a great family. I'm a fan.

Drama, I went to Tenn. Temple in the early '80s. What was his mom's name (first & maiden)?

Wow, I sense another Crusaders trip down memory lane coming on. Where are the McMasters clan to join in? Someone ought to round up Ron Bishop as well. HMO, give him a ring.

I remember her, and her brother played on the men's team. Now the question is, who are you? :D
And what Smith did she marry?

Actually I attended TTU back in the day and remember Monica Matthews. She was the best on the team that year but I didn't think that the team was that good. I remember the team's shorts were down to the knees and looked kind of goofy back then when all the teams they were playing wore really short shorts. Might have had something to do with the rules I don't know. Also remember Tommy McMasters playing. He was the 6th man if I remember correctly.
