Liberty Cross Country and Track & Field Head Coach Brant Tolsma has announced the hiring of Derek Scott and Dan Newell to his coaching staff. Scott will serve as an assistant coach for the men's and women's cross country and track & field squads, while Newell will be an assistant track & field coach.
"After only one year away, Dan returns to help our program as a coach," Tolsma noted. "Liberty's most recent decathlete with national experience, Dan brings his abilities to help a tremendous crew of promising decathletes, most of whom also have national-level potential. Dan is an intelligent, focused young man who will be able to help our athletes spiritually, psychologically and athletically."Click Here for Full Story
Newell is just one year removed from a stellar career as a Liberty track & field student-athlete. He capped off his tenure with the Flames in style, competing in the decathlon at the 2009 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Newell placed 16th at the meet with a career-high 7,302 points, moving up to No. 9 on Liberty's all-time decathlon performance list.
A big meet performer, Newell is one of only two Liberty athletes (also Brandon Hoskins) to sweep the Big South and IC4A decathlons in the same season. The Roanoke, Va., native pulled off the feat in back-to-back years, 2008 and 2009.
