I'm not so sure about that. The talk right now is that there will be a $1 million application fee just to apply for FBS.
I'm fairly certain that we have people who are willing and able to write that check. Compared to what we are spending on stadium expansion it's a drop in the bucket. That is assuming that there are other clearly defined criteria for admission besides ponying up the dough, and we meet them. Obviously noone wants to foot that kind of a bill for applying unless there is a reasonably good expectation of being accepted.
I know it's possible to get that money. What I'm saying is you don't drop $1 million on something that's simply an "opportunity." If you're spending that much money, it better be a really good opportunity.

You don't go to the dance with the ugly girl if you know you've gotta pay for dinner, tickets, flowers, and everything else.

If the girl is pretty enough, you don't mind paying for any of that.

I think we're trying to say the same thing. Of course we don't jump up just to jump up. We are waiting for the "perfect" opportunity. I guess I should have included the word "perfect" originally.

At this point it is pure conjecture what obstacles will be placed in the path of FCS schools looking to step up to FBS once the moratorium is lifted. But a $1M application fee wouldn't be the stumbling block some would anticipate. The additional funding to bump up our scholarship levels to 85 would be a big challenge.

If we see a genuine opportunity to join an FBS league without driving the rest of our athletic department into the poor house I would be shocked if we passed on it.

I do understand the whole conference thing as a big issue. The Sun Belt has room for you in football, but it would increase travel cost. It would be nice if we could get into the CAA and saw them move up to FBS status.

On a side note. I know Sparky is the mascot. Is there a live eagle mascot as well?

I agree. Why not move up,if we
can afford it. Regardless of what FBS confrence extends an invite. We
need to beat Virginia schools
before they beatbus to the punch (I.e. JMU).

I vaguely recall a live eagle at one game in the Late '80s. Doc talked about building a cage for it on campus but there was some concern about permits or something.

While we don't have a live eagle, our nickname is the Flames & we have plenty of live flames after touchdowns. The flamethrowers have been an awesome addition.

If Busch Gardens can have live eagles with their wings clipped, I wish we could get just one, too. Certainly one of the biology profs needs a pet.

From the school who gives scholarships out like candy? I find that hard to believe.

I don't think that will hinder us though. If there's a conference that we'd like and the feeling is mutual, we'd overcome it.

Was that intended to be as sanctamonious as it sounds? That is the overall goal of the school, and always has been, but Doc also had a specific vision for the athletic program.

I would give 500 smackeroos to put my name on a brick at LU.There are many colleges and universities that part take in this and are fairly successful with this as a fund raising venture. Especially in :football.
Does anyone know if LU is looking into doing this type of fund raising?
